Job Description

The phlebotomist plays a key role in supporting laboratory and patient care operations by performing blood draws and specimen collection, processing and labeling samples, troubleshooting routine issues, assisting with training, and recommending workflow improvements to ensure accurate, efficient, and safe handling of all specimens.

Responsibilities

• Perform venipunctures and blood draws using straight needles and butterfly needles in a fast-paced laboratory or hospital setting.
• Collect and store blood, urine, fecal, and other specimens according to established procedures and protocols.
• Explain venipuncture and specimen collection procedures clearly and courteously to patients to ensure comfort and understanding.
• Match laboratory requisition forms to specimen tubes and verify all test requisitions or computer labels against scripts to ensure 100% accuracy.
• Label, centrifuge, split, and freeze specimens as required by specific test orders and protocol.
• Package specimens for transport, following all procedures necessary to maintain specimen integrity.
• Store specimens at the required temperature and place samples in appropriate collection containers or tubes with accurate labeling.
• Fully understand and correctly interpret physicians’ orders related to laboratory testing and specimen collection.
• Record maintenance data and perform decontamination tasks in accordance with laboratory standards and safety guidelines.
• Update patient information accurately in the appropriate systems and logs.
• Answer telephone calls and read laboratory results to satisfy inquiries in a professional and timely manner.
• Attend annual department trainings and remain current with laboratory procedures and safety requirements.
• Understand and comply with OSHA and DEP regulations and all applicable safety and infection control standards.
• Assist with troubleshooting routine workflow issues and make recommendations to improve efficiency and specimen handling processes.
• Support training efforts by demonstrating proper phlebotomy and specimen collection techniques to colleagues as needed.

Essential Skills

• Valid phlebotomy certification for the state of employment, where required.
• Minimum of 6 months of work experience performing venipunctures in a fast-paced laboratory or hospital setting.
• 2–4 years of overall work experience, preferably in a clinical or laboratory environment.
• Proficiency in performing phlebotomy, blood draws, and venipuncture using straight and butterfly needles.
• Strong attention to detail in labeling, matching requisitions to specimens, and verifying test orders.
• Ability to collect, handle, and store various specimen types (blood, urine, fecal) according to established procedures.
• Working knowledge of OSHA and DEP regulations and adherence to safety and infection control practices.
• Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite for basic data entry, documentation, and communication tasks.
• High School Diploma or GED.
• Effective communication skills to explain procedures to patients and respond to inquiries.
• Ability to work efficiently and accurately in a fast-paced environment.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

• Experience recording maintenance data and performing decontamination procedures in a laboratory setting.
• Ability to interpret and follow physicians’ orders related to laboratory testing.
• Experience updating patient information in electronic systems or logs.
• Skill in packaging and preparing specimens for transport while maintaining specimen integrity.
• Comfort answering telephone calls and relaying laboratory results in a clear and professional manner.
• Demonstrated ability to participate in or support training of other staff in phlebotomy techniques.
• Strong organizational skills and ability to manage multiple specimens and requisitions simultaneously.
• Commitment to ongoing learning through annual department trainings and procedural updates.

Work Environment

This role operates in a fast-paced laboratory or hospital environment focused on accurate specimen collection and processing. The phlebotomist works directly with patients and clinical staff, frequently performing blood draws and handling a variety of specimens throughout the day. The position requires strict adherence to OSHA and DEP regulations, infection control standards, and established laboratory protocols to maintain safety and specimen integrity. You will use standard phlebotomy equipment, centrifuges, specimen containers and tubes, as well as computer systems and Microsoft Office Suite for documentation and communication. The work involves periods of standing, moving between patient areas and laboratory spaces, and managing multiple tasks and specimens in a time-sensitive setting. Annual department trainings support ongoing professional development and keep staff current with evolving procedures and regulations.

This is a Contract position based out of Davenport, IA.

The pay range for this position is $21.50 - $21.50/hr.
