About the Position

Job Title: Registered Nurse Profession: RN Specialty: Emergency Room Duration: 13 weeks Shift: 12 Hours Nights Hours per Shift: 12 Experience: 3 years License: Required Certifications: ACLS, BLS, NIHSS, PALS Must-Have: - Large pediatric experience - Mixture of both adult and pediatric experience Description: The unit is an Emergency Room with a fast track of 12 beds typically run by mid-level providers. Travelers will work in both the fast track and the main Emergency Room. The facility is transitioning to 45 total beds, including 12 fast track beds and 2 trauma bays. Trauma patients will not be assigned to travelers. There are 2 psych/seclusion rooms with space for 3 psych patients. Telepsych and a crisis team are available. Average patient holds range from 6-8 hours but can extend to 24 hours or longer if behavioral health units are at capacity. The unit averages 186 patients per day and experiences high census during flu season, peaking at 230-250. Certifications required include BLS, ACLS, PALS, and NIHSS. Patient-to-nurse ratios are typically 4:1. Electronic medical records are managed through a specified system. Charge Nurse duties are managed by Nurse Shift Managers who do not take on patient loads. EMT staffing typically consists of 5-6 personnel if staffing is adequate. Patient sitters from the house are provided for mental health patients. Weekend work is required every other weekend, along with holiday duties. Scrub colors are navy for registered nurses and green for nurse aides. Tele/monitor technicians are present at both the bedside and nurses' station and must be able to read and interpret strips. Respiratory therapists maintain ventilators and registered nurses must be capable of troubleshooting. Emergency Department physicians and mid-level providers are available, totaling 6-7 at a time. Phlebotomy services are operational 24/7 in the emergency room. There is no IV team available. Respiratory therapy and pharmacy services are available 24/7. Shifts are 12 hours long, beginning at various times throughout the day. There is no floating to other units. Floor-specific orientation includes 3 days of training: 2 days on the floor and 1 with an educator. Common diagnoses in this emergency department include general cases, adult and pediatric trauma, STEMI, and stroke cases, with a high volume of mental health and sepsis patients. The current culture among nursing staff is mixed, with a mix of seasoned staff and new hires working together. The facility is actively working on improving the unit's culture. The environment is fast-paced and busy, especially with a large pediatric demographic.
