Police Officer (Lateral Entry)

This position performs general duty police work for the apprehension of criminals, prevention of crimes, protection of life and property, and general enforcement of all laws and ordinances on an assigned shift under general supervision. Duties may also include in-depth investigation of criminal offenses as assigned. Advertisement Notice Certified police officers only. Applicants must have been employed in a full‑time law enforcement capacity for a minimum of six (6) months. This is not for entry‑level applicants. Salary is dependent upon training, experience and qualifications. Key Responsibilities Report for duty at specified times, maintain physical condition, uniform, and appearance in accordance with department policy. Answer all emergency and non‑emergency calls for service, remain alert to community needs, and take appropriate actions to protect life and property. Foster positive community relations through community policing. Study and maintain knowledge of federal, state, local laws, self‑incrimination, right to counsel, arrest, search and seizure, interrogation, confessions, evidence collection and preservation, and departmental policies. Discover and prevent the commission of crimes, enforce ordinances and motor vehicle laws for assigned areas. Conduct preliminary investigations, gather evidence, obtain witness statements, make arrests, and escort prisoners from crime scenes. Detain individuals through the serving of warrants and investigate motor vehicle accidents. Prepare evidence for complaint issuance; serve criminal process, including warrants and subpoenas. Complete reports, compile factual data, and conduct interviews and interrogations when appropriate. Investigate a wide range of cases, inspect crime scenes and accident sites, and identify physical evidence. Preserve evidence by taking photographs, making casts, recording detailed notes, and calling experts as needed. Interview victims, witnesses, and suspects; arrest or detain suspects per proper legal procedure. Prepare cases for court hearings and testify when required. Act in relief capacity, working in other department areas as assigned. Carry out any lawful order or duty prescribed by the Chief or supervisor. Participate in and present preventive education through community and school projects; counsel community members on law enforcement activities. Utilize proper safety precautions; advise supervisors of hazards and corrective actions. Perform additional duties as assigned. Qualifications Must possess current Law Enforcement Officer Certification and have been employed full‑time in a law enforcement capacity for a minimum of six (6) months. The totality of training and work experience will be considered. Applicants must submit a resume and letter of interest. Physical Requirements Work requires occasional exertion of up to 50 pounds of force, frequent standing, speaking, hearing, manipulating hands, and repetitive motions. Tasks may involve walking, stooping, kneeling, crouching, or crawling, and reaching with arms. Duties may require direct pursuit or wrestling, operation of motor vehicles in inclement weather, exposure to outdoor conditions, dangerous or life‑threatening situations, and use of personal protective equipment. Applicants must be capable of close vision, distance vision, depth perception, color perception, night vision, and peripheral vision. Vocal and hearing communication are essential for exchanging detailed instructions or receiving oral information.
