Human Services Specialist I Time-Limited*

Overview The Orange County Department of Social Services has an opening for a Time‑Limited Human Services Specialist I. This position is responsible for determining client eligibility for public benefits, using intake and processing systems, including NC FAST or other automated systems, conducting in‑depth interviews, determining eligibility for benefits, and/or re‑certifying recipients for continued benefits within the guidelines of Federal and State regulations and County procedures. Responsibilities Work is performed under the general supervision of a Human Services Supervisor, with assistance from a Human Services Coordinator. The role employs independent judgment in planning and accomplishing work, making decisions regarding client needs and requests, and performing related duties as required. Salary & Hiring Range Hiring range is based on the Orange County Social Services Step Plan. The Step Plan is based on years of Human Services Specialist I experience. Full credit is given for years of experience performing the same job functions. Partial credit is given for related experience. The top half of the scale is reserved for career employees with senior level experience in the same role. Minimum Qualifications Graduation from an accredited college or university with a bachelor’s degree in human services field or social work. Or possession of a High School Diploma or GED and four (4) years of work experience in determining human service eligibility and participation in the delivery of public assistance programs related to human services. Or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience as stated above. A higher degree does not substitute for work experience. Special Requirements All offers of employment are conditional upon successful clearance of a background check; employment cannot commence until the employee has been cleared.
