JOB TITLE: Building Monitor (Part-Time, Hourly Intermittent)
DIVISION: Administration
LOCATION: Varies based on facility rental
CLASS DEFINITION:
Performs a variety of duties related to the opening, monitoring, and securing of District facilities during evening and weekend room rentals. Meets with renters before and after facility use to inspect and document the condition of facilities, furnishings, and equipment. Monitors facilities during rentals to ensure compliance with District policies and to help prevent damage or misuse. Responds to renter questions, addresses facility or equipment concerns, and provides information regarding District policies, procedures, programs, and facilities. Performs light custodial duties, including sweeping, mopping, vacuuming, dusting, and cleaning to maintain District facilities. Assists with the setup, breakdown, and storage of tables, chairs, and equipment as needed. Secures District buildings following completion of rentals and performs other related duties as assigned.
DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS:
Incumbents in the Building Monitor classification are temporary employees and may not advance to permanent status in any District job classification. Hours of work vary based on the volume and frequency of evening and weekend room rentals. Incumbents represent the District as primary point of contact for persons who rent District rooms for use in the evening or on weekends; help ensure the cleanliness, security, and proper use of District facilities while providing exceptional customer service to facility renters and responds to renter issues and inquiries to provide a positive rental experience.
May be required to work weekdays, evenings, weekends, holidays, or irregular hours based on operational needs and facility rental schedules.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED/EXERCISED:
Receives general supervision from designated District staff and exercises independent judgment within established policies, procedures, and guidelines.
EXAMPLE OF ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
Responsibilities and duties include, but are not limited to the following:
- Opens facilities for evening and weekend room rentals and closes and secures facilities once rentals have been completed and facilities have been vacated.
- Meets with renters before and after the rental to inspect and document the condition of the facility, furniture and equipment.
- Conducts periodic inspections of rented facilities during use to help ensure compliance with District policies and identify potential safety or facility concerns.
- Responds to renter questions and concerns; assists in resolving facility or equipment issues; and provides information regarding District policies, programs, and facility use.
- Performs light custodial duties including sweeping, mopping, vacuuming, dusting, cleaning fixtures and equipment, and emptying waste receptacles to maintain clean and presentable facilities.
- Assists with the breakdown, storage, and organization of tables, chairs, furnishings, and equipment following facility rentals.

Education and Experience Guidelines:
Any combination of education and experience that would provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical path to obtain the required knowledge and abilities would be:
- Previous custodial, facility maintenance, customer service, or related experience is desirable.
- Sufficient education or training to demonstrate the ability to read, write, and communicate effectively in English.
Knowledge of:
- Methods, tools, and equipment used in basic building maintenance and custodial work
- Safe work practices
- Basic customer service principles and conflict resolution techniques
- Cleaning solvents, soaps, waxes and other chemicals used for custodial work
- Good public relations etiquette
Ability to:
- Provide courteous and professional customer service while exercising sound judgment and discretion.
- Work independently with minimal supervision.
- Understand and implement oral and written directions
- Read and understand cleaning chemical labels
- Safely lift, carry, push, pull, and move furniture, equipment, and supplies weighing up to 25 pounds.
- Establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers, the general public, and those contacted during the course of work
- Safely perform the essential functions of the position.

Environmental Conditions:
Work is primarily performed indoors in District facilities. Occasional outdoor work may be required when opening, closing, or monitoring facilities.
Physical Conditions:
The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met to successfully perform the essential functions of this position. Duties require the ability to communicate effectively in person and by telephone; hear and respond to verbal communications; operate cleaning equipment and hand tools; stand, walk, bend, stoop, reach, and climb as necessary to perform custodial and facility monitoring duties; maintain balance while walking on wet or uneven surfaces; and lift, carry, push, and pull objects weighing up to 25 pounds with or without reasonable accommodation.
