Healthcare system is made up of three unique hospitals serving the mountain region of northwest North Carolina and northeast Tennessee. Located in the northwest corner of North Carolina, in the heart of the Appalachian Mountains at 3,333 feet above sea level. While the climate is relatively temperate, the southernmost ski slopes in the eastern US, Appalachian Ski Mountain, Sugar Mountain and Beech Mountain are all within driving distance. The average temperature in the summer is 70 degrees, while only averaging 35 degrees during the winter months with an average snowfall of 3 feet. The residential population is 14,122, but when the local university, Appalachian State University, is in session, that number doubles. The university is also the single largest employer in the community. Tourism, Industry and agriculture also contribute to the local economy.
