Summary An Electrocardiograph technician is responsible for performing diagnostic tests - primarily electrocardiograms (EKGs). The EKG Medical Instrument Technician (MIT) plays a critical role in helping physicians diagnose and monitor cardiac conditions. Using dedicated technology - EKG techs perform diagnostic tests that enable doctors to detect (and treat) cardiac conditions - ensuring accurate data is recorded. Qualifications To qualify for this position - applicants must meet all requirements within 30 days of the closing date of this announcement. United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy Education: There are no specific educational requirements for this occupation Licensure or Certification: Licensure or Certification is not required for this occupation, however - it is strongly desirable at GS-6 or above as evidence of possession of the essential knowledge, skills, and abilities For all specialties identified in this standard - Basic and Advanced Cardiac Life Support certifications are desirable Training which does not result in official certification does not meet this definition English Language Proficiency: Medical Instrument Technicians must be proficient in spoken and written English in accordance with chapter 2 - section D - paragraph 5a May qualify based on being covered by the Grandfathering Provision as described in the VA Qualification Standard for this occupation (only applicable to current VHA employees who are in this occupation and meet the criteria) Electrocardiograph Technicians (EKG) operate instruments used to record electrocardiograms - exercise tolerance tests - 24-48 heart monitoring and scanning - and pacemaker evaluations Certification is offered by Cardiovascular Credentialing International (CCI) as a Certified Cardiographic Technician (CCT) Grade Determinations: Electrocardiograph Technician (EKG) GS-6 Experience At least 1 year of experience comparable to the next lower grade level which demonstrates the knowledge, skills, abilities, and other characteristics related to the duties of the positions to be filled Candidate must demonstrate the following KSAs: Ability to recognize special patient needs such as disabilities, impaired mobility, and complicating medical conditions in order to prepare and position the patient for the prescribed procedure Knowledge of the specialized equipment and accessories appropriate to Holter monitoring and ability to perform such tests Knowledge of universal precautions and sterilization techniques and ability to follow CDC guidelines in cleaning equipment Ability to monitor the patient for adverse reactions and take appropriate action Ability to operate the equipment to perform standard and routine highly specialized procedures including exercise stress testing Certification: No certification is required, however - it is desirable that employees at this level have BCLS (Basic Cardiac Life Support) certification GS-7 Experience: At least 1 year of experience comparable to the next lower grade level which demonstrates the knowledge, skills, abilities, and other characteristics related to the duties of the positions to be filled Experience providing knowledge of the equipment, standard tests and procedures, and typical readings including arrhythmias and abnormalities Candidate must demonstrate the following KSAs: Knowledge of typical patient reactions and signs of distress including the ability to recognize, report and treat potentially lethal arrhythmias Knowledge of common equipment settings and standardized procedures plus knowledge of common errors and corrective measures Ability to modify procedures/positions to obtain the correct results with patients with complicating conditions such as amputations, Parkinson's disease, structural defects, and scar tissue Ability to act as a mentor or preceptor to lower graded technicians Ability to conduct in-service training on the EKG equipment and related instrumentation Certification: No certification is required, however - it is desirable that employees at this level have BCLS (Basic Cardiac Life Support) and ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support) certifications Preferred Experience: EKG Certification 2-3 years, Telemetry/EKG Clinical Experience, BLS Certification Preferred Experience: For more information on this qualification standard - please visit The full performance level of this vacancy is GS-07 The actual grade at which an applicant may be selected for this vacancy is in the range of GS-06 to GS-07 Physical Requirements: Heavy lifting - 45 pounds and over Pushing - 2 hours Reaching above shoulder Use of fingers Walking - 2 hours Standing - 6 hours Repeated bending Visual acuity - 20/30 corrected Ability to distinguish basic colors Hearing (aid may be permitted) Environmental factors: Working with hands in water and Working closely with others. Duties Total Rewards of a Allied Health Professional: This position is that of a medical instrument technician in the EKG device clinic – outpatient arrhythmia monitoring and exercise treadmill laboratory Services performed by the MIT EKG include the performance of electrocardiograms – managing EKGs on the MUSE, treadmill exercise and dobutamine stress echo testing with 12 lead electrocardiographic monitoring – placing two‑week arrhythmia monitors and supporting long‑term ECG monitoring (Veterans with implanted loop recorders) as well as registering Veterans for the home monitoring program for VA National ICD/Pacemaker Surveillance Center Duties can include but are not limited to: Conducts routine and emergency electrocardiogram tests using EKG machines Prepares patient for EKO by assisting patient to disrobe – positioning patient on examination table and instructing patient as to procedure to be accomplished Observes EKG recording and corrects for any artifacts such as wandering or irregular baseline due to loose electrodes Addressing somatic tremor due to patient movement or respiration and alternating current interference Varies test procedures as needed to adjust to patient’s medical condition and to assess the adequacy of results obtained under less‑than‑ideal conditions (e.g. patient cannot cooperate – cannot be positioned normally) Transmits EKG to MUSE system and assigns to Physicians for interpretation Participates in treadmill tests with a physician Conducts Zio Holter Monitor procedure Assists with Stress Echo testing – both Exercise and Dobutamine Echo and coordinates these studies with attending cardiologists and echo lab staff Performs duties in support of pacemaker and ICD clinic Performs basic maintenance on the equipment per current operator’s manual Schedules outpatient clinic appointment using Veterans Health Information Systems and Technology Architecture (VistA) scheduling options Work Schedule: Monday through Friday 7:30am – 4pm Recruitment Incentive (Sign‑on Bonus): Not Authorized Permanent Change of Station (Relocation Assistance): Not Authorized Pay: Competitive salary and regular salary increases. When setting pay – a higher step rate of the appropriate grade may be determined after consideration of higher or unique qualifications or special needs of the VA (Above Minimum Rate of the Grade) Paid Time Off: 37–50 days of annual paid time offer per year (13–26 days of annual leave – 13 days of sick leave – 11 paid Federal holidays per year).
