The Correctional Officer I is responsible for the security, health, welfare and safety of inmates in the County's jail facility, and the effective delivery of correctional services through the observance of all federal and state laws, county ordinances, correctional policies, procedures, rules and regulations. Responsibilities may include supervising inmates and enforcing rules and regulations to ensure the security of assigned area and personnel; performing well-being checks; searching cells and inmates; performing booking and release duties; and recording medical information; maintaining applicable documents. Incumbents of this position may be relied upon for providing credible and effective testimony in court and elsewhere. It is of utmost importance that persons in this position conduct themselves in a manner both at work and outside of work in a manner that does not cause concern regarding their ability to be able to provide credible and effective testimony.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Corrections:

• Supervise inmates, perform well-being checks, administer medication, search cells and inmates and enforce rules and regulations to ensure safety and security of assigned area and personnel.
• Respond to medical emergencies within the facility.
• Must be able to keep accurate logs and update files.
• Book and release inmates; screen inmates for behaviors, attitudes, and interests and record medical information and property brought into the jail facility.
• Conduct daily indiscriminate strip searches of work release inmates upon return from work.
• Monitor volunteers that come in to provide activities for the inmates.
• See to the daily needs of the inmates.
• Can be a bailiff for court at times and make occasional transports.
• Receive training in federal, state and local laws as they apply in law enforcement and detention facilities, including federal and state correction standards.
• Predatory Offender Registration Checks
• Miscellaneous duties as apparent or assigned by supervisory staff.

• Attend trainings and maintain professional knowledge.
• Complete all required online and in-person training.
• Responsible to read, acknowledge and comply with the jail policies contained in the Policy Manual and any revisions made to it.

Qualifications

Education:

• Minimum qualification is a combination of high school diploma and preferred 2 or more years of related experience.
• Obtain all required Correctional Officer State Licenses/Certifications within 12 months of position hire date.

• Ability to exhibit mature judgment, imagination, initiative and problem-solving skills in dealing with inmates.
• Must be knowledgeable in all county and jail policies, procedures and operations.
• Must be proficient in the use of the jail and State computer systems.
• Ability to deal with inmates with tact and impartiality.
• Ability to react effectively in emergency and stressful situations.
• Ability to follow written and verbal instructions.
• Ability to effectively communicate verbally and to write factual reports.
• Ability to perform work requiring good physical condition and mental stability to work in an environment that has the constant potential and exposure to risks of serious injury and exposures to contagious diseases.
• Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with fellow employees, law enforcement, other agencies and the public.
• Ability to develop skill in the use and care of county equipment used in the jail system.
• Ability to maintain a professional attitude and poise when challenged, threatened or responding to assaultive inmates or situations.
• Knowledge of the criminal justice system.
• Ability to work autonomously and make critical decisions in a short time period.
• Ability to work with a diverse and sometimes adversarial/resistive offender population.
• Excellent oral and written communication skills to speak in public, testify in court, and write clear and concise reports.
• Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with others.

• Requires incumbent to work inside, in confined areas, on uneven ground, alone, with and around inmates and coworkers, and have contact with the public.
• Incumbent may be exposed to biohazardous wastes and materials, dust, dirt, fumes, gases, chemicals, noise, excessive noise, infectious disease, pressurized equipment, explosive materials, heat, cold, and wetness.
• Activities that occur continuously are talking, smelling, hearing, communicating verbally, and using effective interpersonal skills.
• Activities that occur frequently include sitting, standing, walking, ascending and descending staircases, pushing, carrying and lifting weight up to 20 pounds, communicating in writing, and using effective time management skills.
• Activities that occur occasionally include bending, stooping, squatting, crawling, crouching, kneeling, pulling, reaching straight, above and below shoulder level with both shoulders individually or at the same time, using near/far vision, depth perception, accommodation and color vision, problem solving, using analytical ability, organizational skills, concentrating, using creativity, and working with interruptions.
• Activities that occur infrequently include carrying and lifting weight from 20 to over 75 pounds. Incumbent must be able to drag or carry 120 pounds or more and have ability to run or jog.
• Exposure to angry, impaired or potentially violent individuals.
• Travel to meetings, trainings and conducting transporting inmates involves driving and its hazards.

• Entry hourly hiring range is $25.79 to $28.91, DOQ.
• Earning potential of up to $36.34 per hour, DOQ.
• Additional shift differential pay.
• 12 hour rotating shifts allows 7 out of 14 days off.
• 12 paid holidays.
