Job Description
Veterinary United is seeking a Director of Finance to help support our next phase of growth.
Veterinary United is an independent, family-owned veterinary practice group rooted in Michigan, with a growing presence in Florida and an exciting future ahead. As we continue to expand, we are looking for a strategic, hands-on finance leader who can bring clarity, insight, and structure to a growing organization.
The Director of Finance will partner closely with leadership to support financial strategy, reporting, budgeting, and sustainable growth across our hospitals. This is a great opportunity for someone who wants to make a meaningful impact in a people-first company that is growing while staying true to its independent, family-owned values.
Financial Reporting & Consolidations
- Partner with the CFO to oversee the preparation of accurate, timely consolidated financial statements across all practice entities
- Lead and support monthly, quarterly, and annual financial close processes in collaboration with the Controller
- Review intercompany reconciliations and consolidation eliminations in Veterinary United's multi-entity environment
- Ensure all financial reporting adheres to US GAAP standards and reflects the true financial position of the organization
- Prepare and present financial reporting packages to the CFO and executive leadership, including commentary and variance analysis
- Review contracts/agreements for business and financial impact
Strategic Planning, Budgeting & Forecasting
- Lead the annual budgeting process across all entities, working with practice managers, the Controller, and the CFO to develop realistic and growth-aligned financial plans
- Develop rolling forecasts and scenario models to support executive decision-making and capital allocation
- Monitor budget-to-actual performance and proactively identify risks, opportunities, and corrective actions
- Produce long-range financial models to support strategic initiatives, capital planning, and investor or lender reporting
- Translate complex financial projections into clear, actionable insights for non-financial stakeholders
Acquisitions & Growth Support
- Partner with the CFO and Business Development to evaluate, underwrite, and execute new practice acquisitions
- Lead financial due diligence on acquisition targets, including quality of earnings analysis, liability assessment, and integration cost modeling
- Oversee the financial onboarding and integration of newly acquired practices, including chart of accounts alignment, intercompany setup, and historical financial reconciliation
- Support the structuring of acquisition transactions, purchase price allocations (ASC 805), and opening balance sheet entries
- Maintain an active acquisition pipeline model to track deal flow, earn-out obligations, and post-close performance
Tax Strategy & Compliance
- Serve as the primary internal liaison for all federal and state income tax matters across Veterinary United's multi-entity structure
- Coordinate with external tax advisors on corporate income tax returns (Form 1120 / 1120-S), quarterly estimated payments, and year-end tax planning strategies
- Monitor multi-state tax nexus obligations as the organization expands into new markets and ensure timely registration and compliance
- Oversee sales and use tax compliance, payroll tax filings, and 1099/W-2 reporting across all entities
- Identify and implement tax planning opportunities to optimize the organization's effective tax rate and cash tax position
Compliance, Risk & Internal Controls
- Support the CFO in designing, implementing, and continuously improving internal controls across all entities to safeguard organizational assets
- Identify financial, operational, and regulatory risks and develop mitigation strategies in partnership with leadership
- Serve as a key liaison for external auditors, tax advisors, lenders, and regulatory bodies
- Ensure ongoing compliance with all applicable federal, state, and local financial regulations across multi-state operations
- Maintain and update the organization's accounting policies and procedures in alignment with US GAAP and organizational growth
Financial Analytics & KPIs
- Design and maintain a comprehensive suite of financial and operational KPIs tailored to veterinary practice performance and organizational health
- Deliver insightful variance analysis, trend reporting, and executive-ready financial commentary on a monthly and quarterly basis
- Partner with operations, practice managers, and the CSO to interpret financial results and drive data-informed decisions
- Leverage financial data to assess practice-level performance and identify opportunities for margin improvement and cost optimization
Team Leadership & CFO Support
- Serve as a key advisor and right hand to the CFO, stepping in to represent financial operations as needed across internal and external stakeholder engagements
- Coach Site Leaders in financial literacy and best practices
- Mentor and develop the Controller and broader accounting team, fostering a culture of excellence, accountability, and continuous improvement
- Collaborate cross-functionally with HR, operations, IT, legal, and practice leaders to support the organization's strategic and financial goals
- Champion Veterinary United's people-first values within the finance function, building a team environment rooted in trust, transparency, and shared purpose

Leadership & Soft Skills
- Exceptional communicator who can present complex financial information clearly and persuasively to executive, operational, and external audiences
- Strategic thinker with the ability to balance long-range planning with near-term execution demands
- Highly organized with a demonstrated ability to manage multiple priorities, entities, and stakeholders simultaneously
- Collaborative, solutions-oriented leader who thrives in a fast-paced, acquisitive, and growing organization
- High integrity, discretion, and sound professional judgment — a trusted partner to the CFO and executive team
