Managing Editor
$30k - $40kPart-time
Company Description The Redding Sentinel , now in its fifth year of publication, seeks a Managing Editor to lead our efforts to inform readers so they can make the most out of living in our small Connecticut town. Our coverage focuses on Redding, everything from town government and the impact of regional and state decisions on our town to local resources, businesses, schools and real estate to the natural world around us, with some forays into neighboring towns that offer resources and interest to Redding residents. The paper is published weekly, with a break over the winter holidays and an every-other-week summer schedule.
Our team includes paid professionals, freelancers, and volunteers. All share our love of local news, and of Redding.
Role Description The Managing Editor role is part-time with some schedule flexibility. The weekly press deadline is Tuesdays at 5:00 p.m., so availability on Mondays and Tuesdays is important. Work is remote, but you’ll be expected to be in Redding often to attend team meetings, town meetings and local events. Responsibilities include planning each issue; working with our freelance reporters and recruiting new ones; assigning writers to stories and keeping them on track; identifying, following, and writing key stories. In addition, you'll work with our advertising and layout teams to make the paper happen, manage freelance costs and other budget items and develop relationships with key people in town, from selectmen to heads of local organizations of all sorts.
