Senior Engineer - Bridge Design

Why does the job exist? The Bridge Management Section of the Bridge Bureau is responsible for performing bridge analysis, maintaining an up-to-date bridge inventory, and developing bridge maintenance projects. The purpose of this position is to assist the Bridge Management staff with these activities. The primary job duties for this position include developing expertise in and performing Bridge Load Rating and developing the State’s Bridge Inventory Database. Other tasks may include bridge preventive maintenance and rehabilitation projects, consultant oversight, supporting District Bridge Engineer requests, and developing emergency repair plans. How does it get done? Assisting Bridge Management staff in performing duties to meet State and Federal requirements; gaining expertise with load rating and bridge management systems, and developing expertise with load rating and bridge inventory software programs. Who are the customers? Internal and external. Internal customers include Bridge Management staff and District Bridge personnel; external customers include consultants and the traveling public. Ideal Candidate Preferred education and experience: Bridge engineering experience such as bridge analysis and design, bridge load rating, and bridge management systems. Prior experience with structural software, bridge management software and electronic drafting Computer-Aided Drafting/Design (CADD) software. Proficiency with basic computation tools such as Excel and Mathcad. Effective and proficient communication skills, including oral and written. Bachelor of Science Degree from an accredited college or university in a relevant engineering discipline and three (3) years of engineering experience. Any combination of education from an accredited college or university in a related field and/or direct experience in this occupation totaling seven (7) years may substitute for the required education and experience. Must be licensed by the NMBLPEPS as a Licensed Professional Engineer in good standing within six (6) months of hire. Employment Requirements Must possess and maintain a valid Driver’s License and a current Defensive Driving Course certificate from the State of New Mexico or must pass and receive a Defensive Driving Course certificate as a condition of continued employment. Employment requires successful completion of a pre‑employment physical exam and is conditional pending results. Working Conditions Work is performed in an office setting with exposure to Visual/Video Display Terminal (VDT) and extensive personal computer and phone usage. Field work is also required in varying weather conditions—hot or cold, humidity, wind, rain, and snow; exposure to sunlight, dust, concrete powder, and environmental allergens; exposure to moving mechanical parts; high, precarious places, toxic fumes/chemical or airborne particles; high volume traffic; insects and reptiles, loud noises, confined spaces, and stressful situations; interaction with public, local, county, school, and city officials by phone and in person; work is performed in the field, monthly assignments that require travel and extended overnight stays away from post of duty along with extended hours and occasional travel. Sitting, standing, bending, squatting, climbing, reaching, kneeling, and crawling for extended periods of time may be required. Ability to lift up to 50 lbs.
