GENERAL SUMMARYWork is performed under the direction of the City of Ypsilanti Building Official. The purpose of this position is to conduct building and property inspections to verify compliance with the adopted codes and ordinances of the City and State, to safeguard public health, safety, and general welfare. PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIESAn employee in this position may be called upon to assist with any or all of the following essential duties. While this does not include all the duties that the employee may be expected to perform, the individual should be able to accomplish each essential function satisfactorily.- Conducts building and rental inspections.- Works with complainants, homeowners, and contractors to resolve issues.- Prepare reports regarding building inspections, complaints, and violations.- Testifies in court providing information and documentation regarding alleged violations.- Provides information regarding violations or compliance requirements; gathers and maintainsevidence as required to support any legal action required.- Performs other duties as assigned or required.MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS, KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIESThe requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skills, abilities and minimum qualifications necessary to perform the essential functions of the position.Education and Experience:- High school diploma or GED.- Must be able to qualify and remain qualified under the rules promulgated by Michigan Act 54 of 1986.Such qualifications in part are: Four years of experience in general building construction as a contractor, skilled worker, a person in charge of construction, or a combination thereof. An architect or engineer who is licensed under the provisions of Act No. 299 of the Public Acts of 1980 may be deemed qualified.- Must retain ICC IPMC inspector certificate within 2 years of hire.2026 HUMAN RESOURCES | CITY OF YPSILANTINecessary Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:- Familiarity with building codes, building techniques and practices.- Ability to interpret, explain, and apply federal, state, and local statutes, ordinances, and otherrequirements.- Familiarity with construction and other building codes.- Familiarity with computer operation using a variety of software.. PHYSICAL DEMANDSThe physical demands and work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job. The employee may be required to work in all weather conditions and may be required to climb ladders or work in trenches to perform necessary tasks above and below ground. The employee is regularly required to travel to inspection sites and drive a car, and to stand, walk, use hands to finger, handle or feel, and reach with hands and arms. The employee is occasionally required to stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl, and must occasionally lift and/or move items of light to moderate weight.While performing duties of this job, the employee works both in a business office setting and in the field. The noise level in the work environment is usually low, but dependent on location, it can range from moderate to high.WORKING CONDITIONSWhile performing the duties of this job, the employee works in a business office setting and the field. During field activities, the employee is frequently exposed to outside weather conditions and occasionally works near moving mechanical parts and/or machinery. The employee is occasionally exposed to, unsafe and unsanitary building conditions, electrical hazards, materials, gases, and chemicals. The noise level in the work environment can range from quiet to moderately loud in the office and may become loud in field situations.
