About Almost There A Mom + Pups Rescue (ATR) is a nonprofit organization in Phoenix, Arizona dedicated to providing loving care for pregnant and nursing dogs, puppies, and other at‑risk canines until they are ready for adoption. We are passionate about giving dogs the best start possible and creating meaningful connections between animals, adopters, fosters, volunteers, and our community. With a dedicated team of approximately 24 staff members and a shelter capacity of approximately 100 dogs, ATR has spent over a decade building a meaningful impact in the Phoenix community. As Executive Director, you will play a central role in shaping the next chapter of ATR's growth, sustainability, and mission impact — building on over a decade of meaningful rescue work. Position Summary The Executive Director serves as the strategic and operational leader of Almost There Rescue, reporting directly to the Board of Directors. This role oversees all aspects of the organization—fundraising and development, staff leadership, shelter operations, and community engagement—ensuring ATR operates efficiently, sustainably, and in alignment with its mission, vision, and values. The Executive Director will directly supervise four directors and, through them, a broader team of managers, coordinators, supervisors, receptionists, and animal care attendants. Key Responsibilities Leadership & Strategy Provide overall leadership and direction in alignment with ATR's mission and goals. Partner with the Board of Directors on strategic planning and organizational growth. Develop and implement programs that enhance the shelter's impact and reach. Development & Donor Relations Lead all fundraising efforts, including donor cultivation, retention, and stewardship. Write and manage grants to support organizational funding. Conduct donor tours and build strong, lasting community relationships. Operations Management Oversee daily shelter operations to ensure high standards of animal care and safety. Maintain compliance with all local, state, and federal regulations. Manage facility operations and on‑site activities. Exercise independent financial and contractual authority up to $10,000 per transaction; transactions between $10,000–$25,000 require Board Chair co‑approval; amounts above $25,000 or any multi‑year contractual commitment require full Board approval. Staff & Human Resources Directly supervise four directors and provide mentorship and development across the full team. Oversee all HR functions including hiring, onboarding, performance management, and compliance. Manage payroll processes and ensure accurate recordkeeping. Foster a positive, collaborative, and mission‑aligned workplace culture. Board Relations & Reporting Attend and present at quarterly Board of Directors meetings. Provide a written monthly report to the full Board covering key metrics, financial status, staffing updates, operational highlights, and progress on strategic priorities. Maintain a regular standing call with the Board Chair for real‑time guidance and relationship building. Notify the Board Chair immediately of any significant financial, legal, HR, or reputational matters outside the normal reporting cycle. Required Qualifications Proven leadership experience, preferably in nonprofit management or animal welfare. Strong background in fundraising, grant writing, and donor relations. Experience managing teams and overseeing operations. Knowledge of HR practices and payroll processes. Excellent communication and organizational skills. Demonstrated business acumen with the ability to make strategic decisions that support operational efficiency, financial health, and long‑term growth. Ability to work both strategically and hands‑on in a fast‑paced environment. Preferred Qualifications Passion for animal welfare and rescue work. Experience working in a shelter or rescue environment. Familiarity with nonprofit financial management and budget oversight.
