Backend Engineer

Responsibilities

• Build and scale high-performance backend services and APIs for Apple services.
• Design and build large-scale batch and stream-processing data pipelines.
• Develop cloud-native distributed systems using event-driven patterns and container orchestration.
• Build observability tools and analytics that detect, diagnose, and document service health issues.
• Own software from development through operations, including testing, performance tuning, troubleshooting, and security.
• Mentor engineers and contribute to collaboration, knowledge sharing, continuous improvement, and product excellence.

Requirements

• Experience building and scaling high-performance backend services and APIs using technologies such as GraphQL, REST, or gRPC.
• Experience with JVM languages such as Java, Scala, or Kotlin, or polyglot experience with Go, Python, or Swift.
• Experience designing large-scale data pipelines for batch or stream processing with frameworks such as Apache Spark or Apache Flink.
• Experience designing cloud-native distributed systems involving microservices, Kubernetes, and event-driven patterns such as Kafka.
• Strong data-systems fundamentals and experience with relational and NoSQL databases.
• Experience with observability tools such as Splunk, Grafana, or Prometheus and diagnosing complex large-scale-system issues.
• Understanding of security fundamentals and commitment to building secure, resilient software.
• A track record of delivering exceptional software through a related technical degree, a non-traditional educational path, or equivalent practical experience.
• Preferred experience with frontend technologies such as React, Vue, or Svelte, or native macOS/iOS development using Swift.
• Preferred curiosity about applying generative AI to engineering challenges.
