Job Title: Med/Surg RN Profession: Registered Nurse Specialty: Acute Care Duration: 14 weeks Shift: Full Time 3x12s - day/night shift variable Hours per Shift: 12 hours Experience: One (1) Year Experience serving in Med/Surg Environment as a Registered Nurse License: NYS RN Licensure Required Certifications: BLS, ACLS Required Must-Have: Experience in Med/Surg Environment Description: The Registered Nurse applies knowledge of nursing theory, technical, and communication skills in delivering high-quality compassionate care to patients and families. The RN assesses patient needs, develops a plan of care in collaboration with the interdisciplinary team, provides direct care, evaluates patient progress, and coordinates care delivery throughout the patient’s episode. The Med/Surg RN develops specialized skills in the area of cardiac care including telemetry monitoring. The RN is accountable for patient and family education to assist them in understanding self-care beyond hospitalization, including lifestyle changes to support health and healing. He/She promotes comfort and provides emotional support in a healing environment. The RN applies knowledge and skill in the delivery of care by assessing patient and family needs through active listening and analyzing data obtained through direct observation and assessment or health team communication. He/She creates a developmentally and age-appropriate, culturally relevant, individualized plan of care to address health problems. In collaboration with the patient, family, physician, and healthcare team members, the RN sets goals and monitors the patient’s progress. The RN adjusts the plan based on patient response or change in condition. The RN promotes, advocates for, and protects the health, safety, and rights of the patient. He/She systematically evaluates the quality and effectiveness of nursing practice and initiates changes in individual nursing practice based on Quality Improvement activities. The RN engages in self-evaluation of practice, identifying strengths and areas for professional development, and takes accountability to enhance knowledge and skills. He/She uses logic and reasoning to evaluate alternative solutions to problems. The RN demonstrates skill in medication administration and nursing interventions. He/She motivates the patient and family by teaching them what is needed to continue care and healing at home. The RN assesses the patient and family learning styles and structures education sessions to maximize understanding. He/She documents the education provided and the patient and family response to the education. The RN encourages teamwork and cooperation among team members to achieve optimal patient outcomes. He/She teaches others as appropriate and delegates tasks consistent with individual training and scope of practice. The RN complies with infection prevention strategies and maintains competencies required to care for the specific population. He/She reports potential safety risks and inappropriate practices. The RN promotes leadership awareness and fosters positive change in the work environment. He/She conducts rounds per protocol and uses tools and equipment needed to keep the patient and family informed and safe. Nursing practice reflects the importance of making a meaningful connection with patients and families. The RN strives to understand what is most important to the patient and family, acknowledging that they are the central focus of all care and services. He/She embraces the importance of creating a healing environment as a key element of professional nursing practice.
