The University of Utah seeks an exceptional general (non-invasive) cardiology leader to serve as the Section Chief for the General Cardiology Section within the Cardiovascular Medicine Division in the Spencer Fox Eccles School of Medicine's Department of Internal Medicine (DOIM). This is a remarkable opportunity for a dynamic academic leader to further the growth and innovation of this vibrant program's clinical, research, educational, and other programmatic missions. The General Cardiology Section is the largest of the five sections (Interventional, Electrophysiology, Heart Failure/Transplant, VAMC) within the Cardiovascular Medicine Division. The faculty and advanced practice clinicians cover the entire spectrum of non-invasive cardiovascular diseases and are dedicated to high-quality, value-driven patient care, education, innovation, and discovery through basic, clinical, population, and health-services research. Nineteen faculty and seventeen advanced practitioners provide outpatient and inpatient services in multiple locations, including the University of Utah Hospital, Huntsman Cancer Institute, and community clinics in Farmington, Park City, Salt Lake City, South Jordan, Stansbury Park, Sugar House, and West Valley. The Division serves a large geographic area in the Intermountain West with general cardiology clinics and sub-subspecialty clinics (Cardio-Oncology, Lipidology, Pulmonary Hypertension, Adult Congenital Heart Disease, Cardiac Rehabilitation, and Sports Cardiology). The Cardiovascular Medicine Division performs over 33,000 imaging (echo/nuclear/CT/MRI) procedures per year and sees over 45,000 patients in our ambulatory clinics. The Cardiovascular Medicine Division and its current faculty are highly invested in clinical and translational research and are fully integrated with our clinical and teaching missions. Research interests in the Division are extensive and include Cardio-Oncology, Lipidology, Pulmonary Hypertension, Sports Cardiology, Advanced Cardiac Imaging, Artificial Intelligence, Medical Device Development, and Preventive Cardiology; extensive programs in both Basic and Data Science exist as well. Clinical trials are also extensive and are supported through a central Clinical Trial Unit (CTU). Currently, our CTU comprises 22 research coordinators, two biostatisticians, and a senior research manager. Many research programs are facilitated by access to the Utah Population Database, the only database of its kind in the United States, and one of the largest sources in the world to support biomedical and health-related research on genetics, epidemiology, demography, and public health with information on more than 7 million individuals. The Cardiovascular Medicine Division is also highly committed to the education of Cardiovascular Diseases fellows, Internal Medicine house staff, PhD postdoctoral fellows, and students. The Division provides training for up to 21 general cardiology fellows through a competitive, accredited CVD Fellowship Program. In addition, we train up to 10 Cardiovascular Sub-Specialty fellows in a range of disciplines, including EP, Interventional cardiology, heart failure/transplant, ACHD, and advanced CV imaging. The University of Utah offers excellent graduate programs for training PhD and MD/PhD students, and a Physician-Scientist Training Program (PSTP) in the Department of Internal Medicine. The Division is also committed to advancing junior faculty in conjunction with institutional research training programs, such as the Vice President's Clinical and Translational (VPCAT) Research Scholar Program and the Master of Science in Clinical Investigation (MSCI) program. The Section Chief will work closely with the Cardiovascular Medicine Chief as part of the Division's leadership team, as well as departmental leaders to promote a collaborative environment that enhances clinical growth and academic development as well as advances research consistent with the Division, Department, and Institutional missions. The ideal candidate will be a strategic leader who promotes institutional stewardship throughout the University of Utah Health and the University of Utah. Competitive candidates will have a track record of accomplishment as an academic cardiologist, as evidenced by practice and excellence in the clinical arena, original contributions to pertinent fields of research, national and international visibility, a history of extramural research funding, and progressive leadership and administrative experience.
