Grounds Supervisor

Job Title: Grounds Supervisor I (S) Position Number: 60089880 Grade: NC05 Overview Skilled supervisory work in the upkeep of lawns and grounds surrounding state institutions or buildings. This role reports to the Maintenance/Construction Supervisor III and is responsible for the design and maintenance of lawns, landscaping, and grounds surrounding Western Correctional Center for Women in Black Mountain, NC. Responsibilities Complete work assignments received from the MMS work order system and the Maintenance/Construction Supervisor. Mow, edge, remove leaves, trash, and snow, and trim trees and shrubs as required. Apply pesticides and select plants and trees that are adaptable to the local climate. Sketch landscape plans for undeveloped areas, locating plants, trees, sidewalks, roads, etc. Prepare requisitions for supplies, materials, and equipment needed for the grounds department and provide cost estimates for expenditures to maintain the grounds and equipment. Ensure grounds equipment has up-to-date service records and is cleaned regularly. Make minor mechanical repairs to equipment such as tractors, mowers, disks, and rakes. Supervise the work of skilled, semi‑skilled, and unskilled labor (including offenders) and ensure they are adhering to OSHA guidelines for safety. Qualifications & Skills Knowledge of horticultural practices and techniques applicable to the layout and upkeep of formal gardens and grounds. Experience supervising employees or offenders. Minimum education: high school diploma or GED and three years of progressive experience in grounds upkeep, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
