Duties
Duties may include but not limited to: a) Performs standard radiographic examinations of the head, trunk and extremities for diagnoses of illness and injuries with minimal to no assistance. Receives patients and explains examinations to be performed, ensuring patients are properly attired and prepared before positioning patient for requested examination. Performs procedures as defined by the equipment and scope of services, possibly including Gastrointestinal (GI) and small bowel series, cholecystograms, cholangiograms, urethorograms, barium and air contrast enemas, myelograms, arthrograms, venograms, Dual Energy X-ray Absorptiometry (DXA) Scans, and contrast injections as it correlates to exam. Correlates clinical history, pertinent clinical data and other ancillary diagnostic examinations to obtain radiographic images of optimal value. b) Able to assist radiologists in fluoroscopic examinations which require incumbent to prepare and administer intravenous, oral, and/or rectal contrast media. c) Assists in training employees and student technologists, coordinates radiation safety, receives patients and explains procedures, prepares x-ray room and equipment; performs portables, operating room (OR) procedures, emergency room (Triage), and recovery room. d) Maintains records of patients examined, and studies performed in the Veterans Health Information Systems and Technology (VistA) hospital information system and Computerized Patient Record System (CPRS). e) Evaluates the nature of critical and emergency procedures and rearranges patient priorities to accommodate these more urgent requirements. f) Responsible for explaining exams to competent patients so that the patient understands what is to be done as well as what hazards, if any, are possible. g) Properly identifies patient images using left and right markers. h) Performs operator maintenance on equipment as required. i) Responsible to the radiologists and supervisors for the quality and quantity of radiographic exams performed to ensure a high level of acceptability of radiographs while minimizing patient dosage and reducing costs. j) Performs quality control/assurance checks on studies performed to ensure that only optimally diagnostic images are forwarded to the radiologist(s) for interpretation. k) Practices radiation safety to reduce exposure to patients, staff and self. This is achieved using lead aprons, lead gloves, lead shields, lead-lined walls and collimation. l) The technologist is responsible for performing call duties to include after-hour tours, weekends, and holidays m) Is familiar with Picture Archiving and Communication System (PACS), providing adequate and proper radiographs. n) Performs clerical duties to include, but not limited to, registering patients' examinations in VISTA, as well as file room duties such as making Computer Disks (CD's) for patients as requested and sending exams to National Teleradiology Program (NTP). o) The incumbent must be professional, cooperative and be able to work with other employees. p) Maintains current knowledge of the developments in the field of allied health sciences as related to Radiologic technology and maintains current ARRT registration.
Work Schedule
Saturday-Sunday 8:00a.m. to 4:30p.m., Monday-Wednesday 1:30p.m. to 10:00p.m. or Sunday-Thursday, 3:30p.m. to Midnight or Monday-Friday 1:30p.m. to 10:00p.m.; based on the needs of the service

Pay: Competitive salary and regular salary increases When setting pay, a higher step rate of the appropriate grade may be determined after consideration of higher or unique qualifications or special needs of the VA (Above Minimum Rate of the Grade). Paid Time Off: 37-50 days of annual paid time offer per year (13-26 days of annual leave, 13 days of sick leave, 11 paid Federal holidays per year) Selected applicants may qualify for credit toward annual leave accrual, based on prior [work experience] or military service experience. Parental Leave: After 12 months of employment, up to 12 weeks of paid parental leave in connection with the birth, adoption, or foster care placement of a child. Child Care Subsidy: After 60 days of employment, full time employees with a total family income below $144,000 may be eligible for a childcare subsidy up to 25% of total eligible childcare costs for eligible children up to the monthly maximum of $416.66. Retirement: Traditional federal pension (5 years vesting) and federal 401K with up to 5% in contributions by VA Insurance: Federal health/vision/dental/term life/long-term care (many federal insurance programs can be carried into retirement)
