Job Description
Step into a rewarding contract role supporting an elementary-aged student who is deaf/hard of hearing as a dedicated 1:1 ASL educational assistant. This opportunity is perfect for someone fluent in American Sign Language who cherishes making a genuine difference in a child's life. By going beyond simply translating classroom instruction, you’ll help nurture academic growth, foster communication, and guide social-emotional development—all through the everyday moments that make school meaningful.
Your compassionate, patient presence will enable this student to access learning, join activities with classmates, and confidently navigate school routines. Collaboration with educators and specialists will be essential, as will your ability to recognize and encourage the student's individual strengths and unique personality.
Key Qualifications:
- Fluency in American Sign Language required
- Experience in schools, special education, or similar settings preferred
- Prior work with children who are deaf/hard of hearing is a plus
- Patient, warm, and encouraging demeanor
- Ability to provide both interpreting and hands-on educational support
- Strong communication, observation, and collaborative skills
- EIPA or RID certification preferred but not required
What You’ll Do:
- Deliver consistent 1:1 support throughout the day using fluent ASL
- Facilitate access to instruction, routines, and peer interactions
- Scaffold academic concepts and encourage engagement
- Employ visual supports and assistive communication tools (AAC, boards)
- Promote positive classroom transitions and support regulation
- Collaborate closely with teachers, DHH staff, and IEP teams
This position offers the chance to become a trusted partner in a young student’s educational journey, building her skills, confidence, and connection to school life. If you are inspired by the idea of combining language access, learning support, and heartfelt encouragement, we want to hear from you!
Apply today and take the next step toward making a real impact in a child’s school experience.
Compensation for this position ranges from $29.69 to $49.69. Eligible candidates may also receive healthcare benefits, housing, and meals/incidentals. Full details of our healthcare benefits plan can be found here. This posting is open for 60 days after the posting date.
