Position Type: Transportation/ Bus Driver Trainee Date Posted: 8/5/2024 Location: Chateaugay Transportation Closing Date: Until filled BUS DRIVER TRAINEE DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS: This is a short-term (up to six (6) months) position allowing incumbent to train and attain the required driver’s license to operate the agency’s fleet of vehicles. The work involves shadowing a bus driver to become oriented with features of the bus, sitting at controls and, under close supervision, perform basic functions of driver in an area with no traffic (i.e.; parking lot). The work is performed under general supervision. The incumbent does related work as required. TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES: Shadows licensed bus drivers and/or trainers; Rides with drivers on regular runs to learn routes and observe how the drivers interact with passengers as well as handling other related driver duties such as evacuation drills, emergency procedures, CODE system, etc.; Sits at controls and, under close supervision, performs functions of a bus driver; Attends trainings to learn motor vehicle rules and regulations pertaining to bus or van operation; Learns and follows procedures around safety and well-being of passengers, and if applicable, maintaining a seating chart and attendance list for each run to have available in the event of an accident; Learns and follows procedures for accident avoidance as well as procedures to follow in the event of an accident; Learns and follows rules and procedures for driving runs outside of the normal routine/schedule; Learns radio communication process and techniques; Learns basic maintenance procedures; Learns to prepare and maintain basic bus routes and pick up routes; Reports any issues with fleet vehicle to immediate supervisor; May assist with garage cleaning and basic maintenance. FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS: Good knowledge of driving safety practices, vehicle and traffic laws and regulations; ability to operate a bus under all driving and road conditions; ability to make minor repairs to the vehicle; ability to understand and follow simple oral and written directions; ability to get along well with passengers and/or children and command their respect; mechanical aptitude; mental alertness; dependability. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Candidate must possess a New York State Driver’s License and must be at least 21 years of age at time of application. Residency Waived Candidates must satisfy the requirements for School Bus Driver set forth in the New York Codes, Rules and Regulations Title 8, 156.3. Candidates would be eligible to apply for a School Bus Driver position after attaining the appropriate level New York State Driver’s License (CDL) with Passenger (“P”) and School (“S”) endorsements. Training period is for a maximum of six months. Removal from the Trainee position will occur if employee has not yet attained the appropriate license. Salary $16.23 per hour not to exceed 540 hours per school year.
