Responsibilities include providing diversionary activities such as reading aloud to the patient, assisting the patient with nutrition needs as necessary under the direction of the Registered Nurse, accompanying the patient to diagnostic testing and procedures and maintaining observation of the patient during tests or procedures, never leaving the patient alone unless instructed to by the nurse, receiving report from the RN and previous Patient Safety Attendant and giving report to the RN and oncoming Patient Safety Attendant before leaving, utilizing the Safe Patient Room Environment Checklist with every change of staff or transfer of care as part of handoff for Baker Act, behavioral health, and suicide risk patients, observing for any changes in the patient's behaviors or actions and immediately reporting them to the Registered Nurse, maintaining reasonably regular, punctual attendance consistent with Orlando Health policies, the ADA, FMLA and other federal, state, and local standards, and maintaining compliance with all Orlando Health policies and procedures.

Qualifications include a high school graduate or equivalent. Licensure/Certification includes maintaining current Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) certification – HeartSaver CPR. Handle with Care (HWC) Certification is required only for the inpatient Behavioral Health Unit (BHU). All other units require Nonviolent Crisis Intervention (NCI) Certification.
