Position Summary Fayetteville Technical Community College is recruiting a full‑time Heavy Diesel Mechanic Instructor to join our Corporate and Industry Training Team. The instructor will teach assigned courses in accordance with the NCCCS curriculum standards, college policies, and accreditation requirements. Classes may be scheduled during the day, evening or weekends, and may take place in FTCC’s service area high schools. Provide hands‑on experience with diesel mechanics trade methods, materials, tools, equipment, and safety precautions. Demonstrate practical knowledge of tools and equipment used in the Diesel Technician trade. Maintain relevant knowledge in the discipline and incorporate innovative instructional techniques. Teach all assigned courses for the full duration of scheduled instruction. Provide general classroom and clinical lab instruction both online and in a traditional setting as required by the department. Teach face‑to‑face classes during days, evenings, and/or weekends on and off campus. Advise and register students in the program or interested applicants. Assist the Department Chair and Dean in designing and updating course syllabi and curriculum reviews. Prepare course materials, deliver lectures, facilitate lab sessions, and lead practical activities on campus and/or work sites. Teach basic principles, equipment operation, and safety protocols aligned with industry standards. Assess student learning through participation, written assessments, hands‑on demonstrations, and competency evaluations. Collaborate with local employers for needs assessments. Ensure each class session contains essential curricular components, appropriate content and pedagogy, and aligns with industry best practices. Implement and accurately maintain a system to track student progress and assess skills and abilities. Monitor student performance regularly and provide timely feedback. Maintain accurate and timely records of attendance, academic progress, certifications, and compliance documentation. Incorporate appropriate instructional technology to enhance learning. Maintain instructional areas and ensure proper operation of classroom and laboratory equipment, reporting malfunctions or necessary maintenance promptly. Work with the FTCC OSHA Services Coordinator to ensure compliance with OSHA and DOT requirements, ensuring instructor and student safety. Maintain cleanliness of all instructional areas. Maintain a safe, clean, and efficient laboratory environment. Ensure all personnel adhere to safety policies and procedures. Maintain training equipment, tools, and facilities to ensure a safe, functional, and industry‑relevant learning environment. Assist in selecting textbooks, instructional materials, equipment, and supplies, recommending resources to the Department Chair or Dean. Support student recruitment, retention, and job placement by providing mentorship, career guidance, and industry insight. Recruit mentors and evaluate qualified part‑time instructors in collaboration with other full‑time faculty, when appropriate. Develop and distribute course syllabi according to established templates, providing students with clear expectations and evaluation criteria. Remain current on state and national certification requirements. Create a student‑centered environment for on‑campus and off‑campus students. Work toward operational excellence through continuous improvement and advisory committee engagement. Implement innovative strategies to meet student needs and improve processes. Collaborate with program leadership, workforce partners, and industry stakeholders to ensure curriculum alignment with current workforce needs. Ensure a safe, respectful, and inclusive learning environment. Communicate effectively with students, staff, and program leadership. Abide by college‑wide policies and procedures regarding classroom conduct. Interact with co‑workers and perform tasks with integrity. Work cooperatively with faculty, staff, students, and the learning community. Promote and support FTCC’s mission, vision, and values, and encourage a positive workplace culture. Recognize and respect diverse experiences and contributions, fostering an inclusive learning environment. Continuously develop and improve skills through professional development. Stay updated on industry developments and standards, incorporating best practices into training. Support student organizations and other campus activities. Participate in faculty committees and other assignments as assigned. Minimum Qualifications Associate Degree in Diesel and Heavy Equipment Technology from an accredited institution, or equivalent. Trade certifications will be considered in lieu of a degree. At least five years of work experience in the trade. Excellent organizational and multitasking skills. Excellent oral, auditory, and written communication skills. Ability to work effectively with diverse student populations. Maintain high levels of confidentiality, credibility, and professionalism. Willingness to complete a Commercial Driver’s License Program (CDL) – Class A course within 90 days of hire and Class B with Passenger endorsement thereafter. Preferred Qualifications Hold a CDL Class A with Passenger endorsement for the last three years. Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) certification. Industry certifications including OSHA 30‑Hour Construction, CPR/AED/First Aid, Work Zone Flagger Certification, and NCCER Instructor Certification Training Program (ICTP). Prior experience teaching at a community or four‑year college.
