The Medical Assistant (MA) assists the Medical Providers (Physician, Nurse Practitioner and Physician Assistant) within scope of practice. MAs also perform clerical and information technology functions for medical providers in a clinic setting, including primary responsibility for the operation of electronic health records and electronic dictation systems. The MA's primary goal is to increase the efficiency and productivity of the Provider. The CMA must be able to anticipate Provider's needs to facilitate the flow of clinic. The MA must be discreet, tactful, and unobtrusive in performance of duties so as not to distract medical staff from patient care. Good judgment, organizational ability, initiative, attention to detail, and the ability to be self-motivated are especially important. A MA must be adaptable and versatile. Good attendance is an important element of this job.

Responsibilities include preparing patient and area for procedures, patient intake, assisting Provider on patient care examination and treatment procedures, acting as a Scribe, discharge of patients, daily tasks, and maintaining and entering information on computer system, as well as documentation in patient charts.

Skills required include medical terminology, recognition of physical exam process, computer proficiency, legible handwriting, organizational skills, professional demeanor, ability to multi-task efficiently, ability to act calmly and effectively in a busy or stressful situation, effective communication in English, adherence to policies and procedures, ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships, and assist in training of new staff and students completing externship.

Experience and education as a Medical Assistant (MA) is preferred, along with history working with NextGen software and medical coding training or certification. Bilingual in Spanish and English is preferred.

Physical and cognitive requirements include sufficient hearing and speaking, visual acuity, cognitive abilities, motor function and mobility.
