Landfill Equipment Operator (Dozer)

Description The Landfill Equipment Operator safely and efficiently operates heavy equipment to maintain and construct the landfill, push trash, maintain proper grade and compaction levels, observe instruments and surroundings while in motion, haul dirt, load trucks with excavator, and add daily cover placement at appropriate levels. The operator follows spotter rules, performs daily preventive maintenance and safety checks in a timely manner, monitors the waste stream for hazardous and dangerous materials, and conducts random load checking to prevent prohibited waste from disposal. Essential Duties & Responsibilities Approximately 75% of time is spent performing heavy equipment operation to maintain and construct the landfill. Around 15% of time is spent performing daily preventive maintenance and safety checks, and 10% is spent monitoring the waste stream for hazardous materials. Safely and efficiently operate heavy and complex equipment such as yard tractors, farm tractors, bulldozers, compactors, motor graders, excavators, or wheel loaders. Use equipment to push waste, maintain the appropriate grade and compaction levels, and observe instruments and surroundings while moving. Haul dirt, load trucks with excavator, drive truck to work sites, and add daily cover placement at appropriate levels. Follow all spotter rules, direct traffic safely, and keep wait times to a minimum. Perform daily preventive maintenance and safety checks, maintaining basic fluid levels on assigned equipment. Inspect equipment for proper operating condition and loose or worn parts, reporting defects or damage to the appropriate authority. Monitor performance of assigned equipment and provide accurate reports of deficiencies or other needs to supervisor. Maintain proper use, operation, and cleanliness of equipment, operating it in a manner that promotes longevity and maximum value. Effectively monitor waste stream for hazardous and dangerous materials and for evidence of unacceptable waste. Perform random load checking to prevent hazardous and prohibited waste from disposal. Participate in cleanup activities as directed. Perform other duties as required or assigned. Typical Qualifications High school diploma or equivalent required. Three years of experience operating heavy construction equipment, with at least one year as the primary operator of assigned equipment. Valid driver’s license and safe driving record required to operate SPSA owned or leased vehicles. Applicable knowledge of heavy and off‑road equipment used in landfill operations. Thorough knowledge of equipment components and operating techniques. Strong awareness of occupational hazards and safety precautions in a landfill environment. Knowledge of standard practices for moving, compacting, and shaping earth for drainage and utility purposes. Ability to operate or quickly learn GPS grade control systems. Management of time and deadlines to complete projects and assignments. Problem‑solving skills and ability to recommend solutions. Basic mechanical knowledge and skills. Strong time‑management skills to ensure responsibilities are completed safely and efficiently. Working Conditions This position requires working outdoors at the landfill facility in all weather conditions, including adverse climatic conditions such as dust, odor, heat, cold, rain, and snow. The environment may involve continuous dust and odor from trash. Appropriate personal safety gear must be worn at all times. Machines, Tools & Equipment Regular operation of heavy and complex equipment such as yard tractors, farm tractors, bulldozers, compactors, motor graders, excavators, or wheel loaders is required. Physical & Mental Requirements Operate light and heavy industrial equipment safely and efficiently. Follow standardized operation practices and guidelines, and communicate verbally and in writing. Read, write, and comprehend general instructions, safety procedures, and reports. Follow oral and written directions given in English. Operate machinery under close working conditions requiring good eye/hand coordination. Perform maintenance checks and minor repairs on equipment. Use both hands and feet to operate equipment pedals, levers, steering wheels, and buttons. Sit and endure constant jerking motions from equipment for 8‑ or 10‑hour shifts. Use a three‑point support system(s) that enables simultaneous use of both hands and one foot or two feet and one hand while maneuvering the machine. Reach and extend hands and arms above shoulder height in any direction. Work with hand tools on equipment surfaces and components. Visually detect defective or worn‑out parts and report them for maintenance. Operate in physically demanding outdoor conditions year‑round. Hold and maneuver water hose discharges of 75 psi and lift up to 80 lbs. with assistance. Exert up to 50 lbs. of force at all times, and up to 30 lbs. frequently. Work in a dynamic team environment requiring responsiveness to changing priorities and needs. Maintain effective working relationships with others. Wear appropriate safety gear, including protective clothing, hearing protection, safety goggles, hard hat, and safety‑steel‑shank boots. Drive an automobile, pickup truck, and various heavy equipment safely. Follow lock‑out procedures on equipment being worked on, per SPSA Safety Policy and Programs. Work for extended periods in confined areas. Climb, crouch, stoop, handle repetitive motion, walk, stay focused, remain aware, and communicate.
