The Support Specialist serves as the primary facilitator of student success during non-classroom instructional periods, helping students develop the academic, organizational, and self-management skills needed to succeed in both high school and college coursework. The employee promotes student independence, accountability, and college readiness by facilitating Learning Lab, supporting DDCC online course enrollment and student success, assisting with Seminar instruction, monitoring student progress, and collaborating with school staff to ensure students remain on track to meet the academic and personal expectations of the Early College program. The employee provides direct support to a diverse group of learners, spending the majority of the workday interacting with students, fostering productivity, monitoring student safety and well-being, and encouraging increasing independence during non-classroom instructional periods. The position requires strong technology skills, the ability to build positive relationships with students, and the capacity to support instruction, organization, and classroom management in both the presence and absence of a teacher. The employee reports to the principal.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

Assists teachers, the school counselor, and the principal in monitoring, supporting, and evaluating student progress. Provides direct support to students engaged in coursework by: Assisting with navigation of learning management systems and digital course platforms Reinforcing and clarifying instructions, assignments, expectations, and content Supporting students with pacing, organization, time management, study skills, self-advocacy, goal setting, and completion of coursework Providing small group and/or individualized academic support Implementing approved instructional and assessment accommodations (e.g., read‑aloud) in accordance with IEPs or 504 Plans Monitors Learning Lab and tracks student progress by: Monitoring student performance data and proactively identifying students in need of academic or organizational support Entering and maintaining accurate student data Monitoring student attendance, engagement, and participation during Learning Lab and communicating concerns to the appropriate staff. Maintains a structured, supportive learning environment within Learning Lab by: Building positive relationships and motivating students with diverse academic needs Monitoring behavior and reinforcing expectations Supporting students with individualized needs in a respectful and discreet manner Supports Learning Lab supervision and operations by: Managing the classroom environment and ensuring appropriate use of technology Supervising students and facilitating previously planned learning activities in accordance with school procedures and district guidelines Assisting with the organization of materials, records, and resources Troubleshooting basic technology issues and referring more complex issues to appropriate personnel Communicating effectively with students, staff, and families regarding student progress and needs Supervising students during transitions and extended learning periods Supports the goals and initiatives of Davie County Early College High School by: Assisting with the implementation of Seminar lessons focused on college readiness, academic success skills, career exploration, and student development Maintaining the confidentiality of student information in accordance with district, state, and federal guidelines Participating in meetings and training aligned with school and district goals Assisting the Test Coordinator as needed, performing various clerical and technical duties as needed Assisting school staff in promoting the expectation of positive student behavior and the consistent application of all school rules and policies Promoting continuous school improvement through collaborative relationships with students, staff, families, community partners, and other stakeholders. Manages college textbook and course code inventory by: Ordering and coordinating the distribution/collection of materials Collaborating with the school counselor, college liaison, and other DDCC/DCECHS staff Performs other related duties as assigned.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

General knowledge of instructional practices, classroom routines, and curriculum, with the ability to support instruction across grade-level content General knowledge of school rules, procedures, and emergency protocols Strong working knowledge of computers, educational technology, and online learning platforms Ability to support and motivate students across a wide range of academic levels, while building positive relationships and encouraging engagement Ability to monitor student progress, maintain accurate records, and perform general clerical duties Ability to maintain a safe, clean, and orderly learning environment while effectively managing student behavior and monitoring student well‑being Ability to problem‑solve, adapt to student needs, and implement approved accommodations (e.g., read‑aloud) in alignment with IEPs and 504 Plans Ability to communicate clearly and professionally while establishing effective working relationships with students, staff, and families Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions

MINIMUM TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE

High school diploma and either an associate degree (or equivalent hours or higher degree) or demonstration of being highly qualified by completing a local training program and meeting assessment requirements in reading, writing, and math. Experience supporting students in an instructional, educational technology, or school setting is preferred.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS OR STANDARDS REQUIRED

TO PERFORM ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

Physical Requirements : Must be able to use a variety of equipment, classroom tools, and technology, including those for children with special needs. Must be able to exert a negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects. Due to the amount of time spent standing and/or walking, physical requirements are consistent with those for Light to Medium Work. Conceptual Awareness : Requires the ability to observe, compare, and contrast various people, data, or items. Interpersonal Communication : Requires the ability to speak and/or signal people to convey or exchange information. Includes receiving instructions, assignments, and/or directions from colleagues or supervisors. Language Ability : Requires the ability to read and prepare a variety of instructional materials, correspondence, reports, handbooks, forms, lists, etc. Intelligence : Requires the ability to rationalize and solve problems with a variety of variables, aligned with policies, procedures, and professional expectations. Verbal Aptitude : Requires the ability to record and deliver information, explain procedures, and follow oral and written instructions. Must be able to communicate effectively and efficiently in standard English. Numerical Aptitude : Requires the ability to use mathematical operations and apply mathematical skills to solve work‑related problems; including but not limited to adding, subtracting, and utilizing decimals and percentages. Motor Coordination & Dexterity : Requires the ability to coordinate hands and eyes rapidly and accurately. Must have minimal levels of eye/hand/foot coordination. Visual and Spatial Aptitude : Requires visual acuity to complete essential duties, including the ability to conceptualize visual representations, size, shape, and color. Interpersonal Temperament : Requires the ability to deal with people beyond giving and receiving instructions. Must be adaptable to performing under stress and when confronted with persons acting under stress. Physical Communication : Requires the ability to talk and hear: (Talking: expressing or exchanging ideas by means of spoken words. Hearing: perceiving nature of sounds by ear). Must be able to communicate via telephone.
