Employee Relations/Workplace Investigator The position of Employee Relations/Workplace Investigator (Investigator) is a professional investigative role that serves as an independent investigator responsible for conducting neutral, thorough, and well‑documented investigations of workplace misconduct, violations of University policy, discrimination, harassment, retaliation, and other equal‑opportunity–related matters. The Investigator plays a crucial role in promoting a fair and inclusive workplace and in protecting the rights of employees while enforcing equal employment opportunity for all university employees. Responsibilities Conduct neutral, thorough investigations of workplace misconduct and policy violations. Gather and analyze evidence, interview witnesses and parties involved, and determine the merit of complaints. Make recommendations regarding appropriate actions such as mediation or disciplinary action. Apply advanced investigative and interviewing skills to develop objective factual records and defensible investigative findings. Collaborate with Human Resources, Legal Counsel, Title IX, Compliance, and campus leadership, ensuring due process and confidentiality. Perform other duties as assigned. Minimum Requirements Bachelor’s degree in administration of justice, criminal justice, human resources, public or business administration, legal studies, or a related field. Three to five years of experience in EEO investigations, employee relations, HR compliance, or legal investigations, with excellent written and oral communication and interpersonal skills. In‑depth knowledge of federal, state, and local EEO laws and regulations (e.g., Title VII, ADA, ADEA, FMLA). Demonstrable skills in investigative techniques, legal analysis, objective report writing, conflict resolution, and policy interpretation. Ability to handle sensitive matters confidentially, conduct impartial investigations, communicate effectively with diverse stakeholders, and provide appropriate training. Strong analytical and investigative interviewing skills, with the ability to evaluate credibility and evidence while remaining impartial and objective. Strong written and oral communication skills and the ability to work independently and manage a high workload. Preferred Experience, Skills, Training, and Education Experience conducting investigations in higher education, public‑sector, or similarly regulated environments. Five to seven years of professional investigative experience, including criminal investigations in law enforcement, office of inspector general, internal affairs, or other formal investigative roles. Master’s degree preferred. Training or certification in workplace investigations, internal affairs, or administrative investigations. Knowledge of federal and state laws related to discrimination, harassment, retaliation, or equal opportunity. Prior experience collaborating with legal counsel, external investigators, or oversight agencies. Experience supporting or participating in internal affairs matters within a law enforcement or campus safety environment. Remote/Hybrid Work Arrangement Hybrid (employees work part‑time in the office for tasks that require on‑campus engagement, with remaining time at home). Employees are required to reside in North Carolina within a two‑hour commuting distance of their assigned duty station.
