Charge Nurse RN II IMU

Overview At Houston Methodist, the Charge Nurse position is a licensed professional Registered Nurse (RN) who, as an experienced clinician, functions at the Competent to Proficient stage of Benner's model of clinical practice. This position creates an environment for the management and delivery of safe patient care. In addition to fulfilling the duties and responsibilities of a clinical nurse, the Charge Nurse serves as a role model and coach to department personnel and assists in developing their skills and knowledge. The Charge Nurse provides nursing care to a diverse patient population, conducts assessments, assists with exams and treatment, maintains medical records, and coaches and mentors staff in clinical and professional practice. Role modeling compassionate communication with physicians and the interprofessional health care team, the Charge Nurse assumes leadership responsibilities with high‑level contributions at the bedside, unit, service line, and across the institution. Responsibilities Lead unit and shared governance activities, assess unit needs related to practice and improvement opportunities, serve as a clinical resource for both unit and hospital staff, and coordinate unit and hospital‑wide education in partnership with management. Coach and mentor department staff in clinical and professional practice, role‑model compassionate communication, and support staff engagement and retention. Assume leadership responsibilities with high‑level contributions at the bedside, unit, service line, and across the institution. Essential Functions People Essential Functions Foster staff engagement by demonstrating active listening, requesting and acknowledging feedback, making equitable decisions, and supporting organizational goals. Role model inter‑professional communication, assist with staff stress management, and improve departmental turnover/retention scores. Mentor and provide oversight for students, new employees, and preceptorships; resolve conflict with patients, families, physicians, and other team members. Service Essential Functions Lead patient and family‑centered care standards and mentor others regarding specialty populations. Maintain ongoing interactions with patients, families, and staff to improve patient quality of care through leader rounding. Drive department service standards to improve patient satisfaction scores on the unit‑based scorecard. Quality/ Safety Essential Functions Model standards of care related to the nursing process and participate in improving quality indicators and patient safety goals. Coordinate nursing care throughout the shift, ensuring duty to patients is met while considering patient acuity and staff skill level. Facilitate seamless patient flow and respond to Rapid Response/CERTs and emergency codes. Participate in initiatives to improve quality and safety scores on unit and hospital scorecards. Finance Essential Functions Implement department strategies to achieve financial targets on unit‑based scorecards and mentor others to improve documentation, reduce length of stay, and minimize overtime. Attend daily care coordination rounds and manage productivity in accordance with staffing grid. Provide input into unit resource utilization and oversee shift‑by‑shift resource allocation. Growth/ Innovation Essential Functions Identify and implement innovative solutions for practice changes to improve patient care or unit operations, and lead or participate in unit projects and shared governance activities. Expand individual nursing knowledge and coach staff to grow in knowledge, abilities, skills, and attitudes. Develop and disseminate educational resources and programs to improve quality and professional practice. Qualifications Education Graduate of an education program approved by the credentialing body for the required credential(s). Proven competency in nursing and education. Experience Twenty‑four months of clinical nursing experience with demonstration of progressive leadership skills. Licenses and Certifications RN – Registered Nurse – Texas State Licensure – Texas Board of Nursing/PSV Compact (must obtain permanent Texas license within 60 days). BLS – Basic Life Support or Instructor (AHA). ACLS – Advanced Cardiac Life Support or Instructor (AHA) within 4 months. NIHSTROKE – National Institute of Health Stroke Scale Certification (AHA) within 4 months. Preferred Certifications Magnet – ANCC Recognized Certification. NVCRISIS – Nonviolent Crisis Intervention or Instructor (CPI). Supplemental Requirements Work Attire Uniform: Yes Scrubs: Yes Business Professional: No Other (department approved): No On‑Call Employees may be required to be on‑call during emergencies (e.g., disaster, severe weather events) regardless of the following.
