About the Position

Job Title: Emergency Department Registered Nurse Profession: Registered Nurse Specialty: Emergency Duration: 26-week contract for holidays Shift: Part Time, Day/Night rotations Hours per Shift: 2x12s + two on-call shifts in four weeks Experience: Two years acute hospital experience as a Registered Nurse, one year Emergency Department experience License: Current Registered Nurse Licensure Certifications: BLS, ACLS, PALS, Stroke Certification (Must be AHA or RQI) Must-Have: Two years of experience serving as a Registered Nurse, at least one year in an Emergency Department environment Description: The Emergency Department Registered Nurse applies knowledge of nursing theory, technical skills, and communication skills in delivering high-quality compassionate care to patients and families. The ED RN assesses patient needs, identifies urgent or emergent care priorities, and collaboratively provides direct care. He/She applies appropriate interventions and evaluates patient progress. The ED RN demonstrates skill in the use of various invasive and non-invasive procedures, treatments, and therapeutic interventions appropriate for managing life-threatening and routine emergency situations. He/She utilizes the principles of relationship-based care to alleviate anxiety, provide information, and address pain/discomfort and safety. The ED RN conducts a physiological, psychosocial, emotional, and cultural assessment of patients of all age groups, their families, and support systems as appropriate. He/She connects with patients and families during triage and identifies the initial management of patients based on triage standards. The ED RN establishes rapport with patients and families, addresses comfort needs, listens carefully, and provides frequent updates. He/She conducts a primary assessment of critical need, detects and documents major deviations from normal, and correctly identifies necessary steps and interventions. The ED RN uses direct observation, patient/family interviews, EMS reports, and data to conduct secondary assessments. He/She identifies contributing factors, health history, and events preceding the emergent health event. In addition, the ED RN assesses psychosocial needs, documents, and reports any suspicion of domestic violence or abuse. He/She reassesses patients to identify responses to treatment and changes in condition, responding appropriately. The ED RN encourages mutual trust, respect, and cooperation among team members to accomplish optimal patient outcomes. He/She teaches others as appropriate and delegates tasks consistent with individual education, training, and scope of practice. The ED RN understands the importance of safeguarding public safety through compliance with infection prevention strategies. He/She prepares patients and families for diagnostic procedures and treatments, making appropriate referrals for post-emergency care. The ED RN teaches patients necessary information to continue care and healing at home. He/She assesses the patient/family learning styles and structures education sessions to maximize understanding. The ED RN asks questions to evaluate retention of key points during discharge instructions. He/She seeks to understand what is most important to patients and families, acknowledging that they are the central focus of care. The ED RN embraces the importance of creating a healing environment as a key element of professional nursing practice. He/She keeps patients and significant others informed throughout the care process. The ED RN anticipates patient/family needs and maintains awareness of the patient's condition during their stay. He/She updates patient communication boards throughout the emergency department visit.
