Position Overview The Equipment Operator supports a telecom construction crew for large‑scale projects with an emphasis on underground construction across the USA. This position operates construction equipment—including backhoes, cable plows, trenchers, hydraulic reel trailers, and other machinery—and assures maintenance of these as required. The role also operates horizontal/directional drill rigs and locates equipment and product support equipment. It performs semi‑skilled activities related to HDD locating and must be familiar with industry standards, policies, guidelines, and procedures. The position is familiar with preparation, methodology, tools, and safety related to the placement of underground telecommunication utility infrastructure for a variety of projects, including municipal projects. Essential Duties & Responsibilities Read and interpret work orders, specifications, engineering drawings for required tasks and sequence. Read and understand site plans, maps, diagrams, designs, and prints needed to support assigned projects. Operate heavy equipment/machinery with strict adherence to safety protocols. Possess sound understanding of issues relating to ground disturbance. Perform minor maintenance and cleaning of equipment/machinery. Work closely with ground crew to achieve project objectives. Pothole all utilities that will be paralleled or crossed during the bore shot; verify existing utilities. Locate the drill head from entry to exit without hitting any utilities at correct depth. Hook up swivel, reamer, and pipe product that will be pulled back to complete the bore shot; pull back the product with the correct hole opener and utilize the proper mud mixture so that the product moves from point B to point A. Before the bore shot is started, walk out the bore shot to ensure all utilities have been located and develop a plan for going above or below each utility or obstacle in the bore path. Fill water tanks with water and combine water with chemicals for boring according to the ground being drilled. Ensure work sites are cleaned and cleared of hazardous materials before each construction project and before leaving the area at the end of each workday. Complete all projects with safety as the #1 priority, ensuring compliance with internal safety standards and all governmental orders. Act as the subject‑matter expert when assigned to a project. Quality control of work completed. Perform other projects or duties as assigned. Qualifications High School diploma or GED is preferred. 3+ years of experience working as a heavy equipment operator. Able to listen, follow directions, effectively communicate with supervisors and coworkers, and willing to continue enhancing skills. Displays a professional and courteous attitude toward coworkers, supervisors, and the general public at all times. Knowledge and understanding of loading, unloading, and transport procedures for equipment as well as compaction requirements for ground conditions. Knowledge in support equipment operation, digging equipment, vacuum units, reel trailers, backhoes, plows, and trenches. Knowledge and understanding of safety systems associated with equipment operation, including set‑up and emergency procedures. Must be able to work some weekends and evenings when needed. Valid driver’s license with a clean record required; Class A driver’s license preferred. Ability to think analytically, apply sound judgment, solve problems, and make effective decisions. Familiarity with Microsoft Office Suite. Utilizes good listening and verbal communication skills to understand and clarify the needs of crew members and company management. Ability to travel as needed to perform duties of the position. Physical Requirements Must be able to work in a non‑climate‑controlled environment, in inclement weather, stand, and drive for extended periods of time. Must have physical strength, balance, hand‑eye coordination, and stamina necessary to complete jobs in various areas. Must be able to perform physical activities that require considerable and sustained use of arms, legs, and the entire body, such as climbing, lifting, balancing, walking, stooping, sitting, standing, and handling of materials up to 75lbs. Must be able to wear required personal protective equipment.
