Salary $78,592 – $98,088 Description Preliminary Research Associate (PREP) – National Institute of Standards (NIST) Professional Research Experience program. Research Title National Windstorm Impact Reduction Program (NWIRP) – Windstorm Disaster Survey Development Researcher The work will entail: Developing survey instruments in partnership with a social scientist to collect data on evacuation practices from windstorms. The surveys will target the public living in windstorm‑affected areas and emergency managers responsible for evacuation decisions. The instruments will capture factors influencing decision making, information communication and risk assessment across different disaster phases, and will be designed for reuse in future events. Key Responsibilities Review literature to identify improvement opportunities in evacuation practices, procedures, and compliance. Collaborate with a social scientist and team members to develop survey instruments tailored for residents and emergency managers across disaster phases. Ensure survey adaptability for various disaster types and time periods, from pre‑event preparation to initial recovery. Present findings at internal meetings and on occasion with external stakeholders. Maintain research protocols, data, and documentation in an organized and compliant manner. Assist in preparing instruments and packages for Institutional Review Board (IRB) and/or Paperwork Reduction Act (PRA) clearances. Qualifications U.S. citizenship preferred; currently living in the United States. Knowledge of the physical impacts of wind events, storm surge, and wildfire on built environments. Understanding of human decision‑making processes during high‑stress, time‑sensitive events, particularly risk assessment and evacuation. Experience in survey design methodology, ideally in social science or public safety contexts. Ph.D. in Civil or Structural Engineering, or a related field. Ability to write clear technical reports.
