Firefighter The purpose of this classification is to perform firefighting and life rescue duties. Responsibilities include administering appropriate emergency medical treatment to victims of accidents and other life-threatening situations; maintaining firefighting vehicles and equipment, assigned fire station, and emergency medical vehicles and equipment; and participating in training and certification programs. Examples of duties include: Responding to emergency calls for fire suppression, medical assistance, hazardous materials incidents, motor vehicle accidents, natural disasters, explosions, bomb threats, downed power lines, and other emergency situations. Providing protection of life and property by suppressing, controlling, and extinguishing fires; performing search, rescue, extrication of victims, and forcible entries; assisting individuals from burning structures; establishing openings in buildings for entrance, ventilation, or salvage; ventilating smoke and gas from buildings; performing salvage operations such as throwing salvage covers, sweeping water, and removing debris; assisting with cleanup activities; and exercising control of emergency situations until relieved by a superior officer. Performing basic life rescue duties by administering basic first aid, CPR, and medical treatment or stabilizing victims who are dealing with traumatic medical issues. Providing advanced emergency medical care to injured and sick persons by conducting physical examinations, obtaining medical histories, identifying and evaluating various mechanisms of injury, formulating treatment plans, and extricating, stabilizing, and transporting patients. Communicating with medical personnel at emergency treatment facilities by obtaining instructions regarding further treatment and arranging for reception of patients at treatment facilities. Maintaining a state of constant readiness and preparation for emergency response by checking and maintaining stock of equipment and supplies on fire vehicles and in fire stations; re-loading equipment and apparatus following response to emergency calls; assisting in preparing apparatus for subsequent emergencies and in testing personal equipment, hoses and pumps, and other tools and apparatus; and ensuring the emergency medical service equipment is properly stocked and operational. Maintaining a comprehensive, current knowledge and awareness of applicable laws, regulations, policies, and procedures related to firefighting and basic emergency medical care by participating in physical fitness training, training drills, and other continuing education activities; attending shift meetings, training and certification classes, workshops, and seminars as appropriate; and ensuring completion of required annual certification hours as a certified Firefighter. Performing general maintenance tasks necessary to keep vehicles, buildings, quarters, apparatus, equipment, and tools in operable condition by inspecting and testing equipment; replacing fluids and greases equipment; replacing parts; washing and cleaning equipment, cleans quarters, and performing grounds maintenance; monitoring equipment operations to maintain efficiency and safety; reporting faulty equipment for necessary maintenance work; and completing checklists. Participating in fire prevention, pre-fire planning, and other fire education activities by conducting fire safety programs, apparatus displays, and skills demonstrations; conducting tours of fire station and fire trucks; and participating in community events and fundraisers. Processing a variety of documentation associated with department/division operations by receiving and reviewing various documentation; reviewing, completing, processing, forwarding, or retaining as appropriate; preparing or completing various forms, reports, correspondence, and other documentation; compiling data for further processing or for use in preparation of department reports; and maintaining computerized and/or hardcopy records. Operating a personal computer to enter, retrieve, review, or modify data, utilizing Microsoft Word, Excel, Gemesis, CAD, word processing, spreadsheet, database, Internet, e-mail, or other software; and operating general office or other equipment as necessary to complete essential functions. Operating or utilizing various firefighting equipment, emergency medical equipment, power tools, hand tools, and supplies in order to complete assignments by operating and maintaining communications equipment and personal protective equipment in hazardous situations. Communicating with co-workers, police personnel, local and state public safety officers, hospital personnel including doctors and nurses, fire and accident victims and their families, and other individuals as needed to coordinate work activities, review status of work, exchange information, or resolve problems. Performing other related duties as required. Minimum qualifications include a high school diploma or GED, supplemented by vocational or technical training in firefighting, supplemented by two years of experience as a certified firefighter, or any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience which provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities for this job. Specific license or certification required: Must possess and maintain a valid Georgia Commercial Driver's License (CDL), including appropriate endorsements, NPQ Firefighter I, and Emergency Medical Technician certifications. Additional certifications may be required according to area assignment. Specific knowledge, skills, or abilities: Must be able to demonstrate proficiency in performance of the essential functions and learn, comprehend, and apply all County or departmental policies, practices, and procedures necessary to function effectively in the position.
