Position Information Title: Graduate Assistant – Academic Coaching The College of Graduate Studies (COGS) coordinates all of BSU’s Graduate Assistantships. For more information about the program or to check the status of your application, contact: Cassie Birch View email address on click.appcast.io Position Description To Advance the Mission for Academic Coaching, the Graduate Assistant (GA) will work 20 hours per week and receive up to 24 credits of tuition and student fee waivers: 9 for fall, 9 for spring and 6 for summer. The Academic Achievement Center (AAC) is the largest hub of student academic support services at Bridgewater State University, offering academic advising, learning assistance, student accessibility, and testing services. Within Learning Assistance there are six main areas: Academic Coaching, Accounting and Finance Lab, Math Services, CRIT and CORE Tutoring, Tutoring for Multilingual Services, and the Writing Studio. All AAC areas dedicate each day to student success, retention, equity, diversity, and inclusion. Core Duties Develop and provide student‑centered university‑level learning assistance such as goal‑setting, motivation, time/task management, active learning strategies, communication with professors, research and library navigation assistance, campus resources, and referrals for any enrolled undergraduate and graduate student using a social justice lens. Assist in the development and presentation of in‑class presentations and workshops throughout the semester (may require evening scheduling). These presentations accommodate faculty requests and/or requests from other departments and student organizations and deliver learning assistance to a broader student population. Spearhead equity‑minded initiatives that advance the mission and further develop Academic Coaching, including creation of marketing materials, workshop development, collaboration with other departments, outreach to special populations, and data collection and analysis. Conduct outreach to students, faculty, and staff regarding support services provided by Academic Coaching. Maintain a spreadsheet of utilization data regarding Academic Coaching services. Participate thoughtfully in regularly scheduled staff and supervision meetings, and in‑service training opportunities. Seek out training opportunities on learning assistance topics, such as cultural competence, ADA compliance, accessibility services, equity, inclusion, and other relevant topics. Facilitate weekly book clubs for students enrolled in the supported Writing Rhetorically, ENGL 101E, and Academic Strategies Colloquium, ENGL 144 courses. Contribute to social media platforms. Work with supervisor to identify and design a research project that will be presented at the College of Graduate Studies required Research Symposium, held each spring semester. Collaborate with all AAC staff and faculty as needed and perform other professional tasks as assigned. Strive to uphold the AAC mission as a center guided by equity, diversity, inclusion, accessibility, anti‑racism, and disability rights & advocacy throughout the AAC and Bridgewater State University community. Required Minimum Qualifications Demonstrated organizational skills, attention to detail, motivation, and a high degree of openness to new approaches and ideas. Willingness to present to large groups and lead activities in a workshop or presentation setting. Experience and/or ability to work with, and motivate, students from diverse populations, including those with learning disabilities, students of color, multilingual students, non‑binary and transgender students, and non‑traditional students. Commitment to customer service excellence and support to enhance an environment of equity, diversity, and inclusion. Ability to initiate work independently, without direct supervision, and to identify and resolve day‑to‑day problems. Ability to work in a fast‑paced, collaborative environment. Strong computer skills; proficiency with Microsoft Office products. Preferred Qualifications Strong interest in college student development and/or learning theory. Experience in teaching, academic tutoring, peer mentoring, or counseling. Interest in interpreting data related to program growth and development. Physical Demands Typing.
