Physician Assistant – Acute Care Gastroenterology

Department: Gastroenterology
Location: Hampton Roads, Virginia
Position: Full-Time

Position Summary

The Acute Care Gastroenterology Physician Assistant (PA) provides comprehensive care to hospitalized adult patients with acute and complex gastrointestinal conditions. The PA works collaboratively with Gastroenterologists, hospitalists, nursing staff, and other members of the healthcare team to evaluate patients, develop treatment plans, coordinate care, and facilitate safe and timely discharge.

Key Responsibilities

• Perform inpatient Gastroenterology consultations, histories, and physical examinations.
• Evaluate and manage patients with conditions such as GI bleeding, liver disease and cirrhosis, pancreatitis, inflammatory bowel disease, anemia, abdominal pain, and other acute GI disorders.
• Review and interpret laboratory results, imaging, and other diagnostic studies.
• Develop and implement treatment plans in collaboration with Gastroenterologists.
• Monitor patients and recognize changes in clinical condition requiring escalation of care.
• Evaluate and prepare patients for endoscopic and other GI procedures and provide appropriate post-procedure management.
• Participate in daily rounds and coordinate care with physicians, nurses, and other healthcare professionals.
• Provide patient and family education regarding diagnosis, treatment, procedures, medications, and follow-up.
• Complete timely and accurate medical documentation.
• Participate in quality improvement and patient safety initiatives.
• Participate in assigned weekend, holiday, and/or call coverage.

Qualifications

• Graduate of an accredited Physician Assistant program.
• Current NCCPA certification.
• Current or eligible Virginia PA license.
• BLS certification; DEA registration or eligibility required.
• Hospital-based or acute-care experience preferred.
• Gastroenterology experience preferred but not required.
• Strong clinical assessment, communication, and decision-making skills.

Compensation & Benefits

• $60.00–$76.00/hour, based on experience
