This is a temporary/entry level class in the Audiologist series. Incumbents in this class are graduates who are in their final year of an approved doctoral degree program in audiology and are generally working to obtain clinical experience needed for the licensing examinations. Incumbents perform a variety of audiology services including assessment, treatment planning, communication, and documentation. Incumbents work under direct and immediate supervision of a licensed Audiologist.

Education:

Current enrollment in an accredited college or university audiology program as described by the State of California, Speech-Language Pathology and Audiology and Hearing Aid Dispensers’ Board.

Special Requirement:

At the time of appointment, must possess and provide confirmation of a Required Professional Experience (REP) Temporary License issued by the State of California, Speech-Language Pathology and Audiology and Hearing Aid Dispensers’ Board.

TYPICAL DUTIES

• Performs assessments and interprets test results related to disorders of human hearing, balance and other neural systems.
• Plans and implements treatment for patients; establishes appropriate treatment goals; uses equipment properly.
• Coordinates treatment programs with physicians, nurses, professional and para-professional staff.
• Records information on patient charts, maintains accurate records, and prepares written reports.
• Attends staff meetings and patient conferences; participates in in-service and staff development class.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education: Current enrollment in an accredited college or university audiology program as described by the State of California, Speech-Language Pathology and Audiology and Hearing Aid Dispensers’ Board. KNOWLEDGE

Current principles, methods, techniques, equipment and materials used in audiology; possible reactions of and hazards to patients during treatment, and of precautionary and remedial measures; anatomy and physiology related to treatment; psychological and physiological problems of persons with disabling conditions.

ABILITY

Prioritize, organize and coordinate care; interpret and adapt physicians orders and/or written reports; communicate effectively; work independently; establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with patients, families, staff and others; maintain excellent customer relations.

PHYSICAL/MENTAL REQUIREMENTS

Mobility–Constant keyboard operation; sits, stands, walks, pushes and pulls, bends and squats frequently; runs and climbs stairs occasionally; lifts, positions, pushes, and/or transfers supplies and equipment. Lifting–Lifts up to 30 pounds occasionally; restrains, lifts/turns heavy objects or people occasionally. Visual– Constant use of overall vision, color perception, depth perception, hand/eye coordination; reading and close-up work and peripheral vision. Dexterity–Constant holding, reaching, grasping, and writing. Repetitive motion is required occasionally. Hearing/Talking–Hears and talks in person constantly. Occasionally hears on telephone/radio, faint sounds, and occasionally talks on the telephone. Emotional/Psychological–Occasional exposure to emergency situations, trauma, grief, death, and hazard materials; occasional travel; constant public contact, decision making and concentration. Environmental –Occasional exposure to noise, dirt, dust smoke, fumes, poor ventilation, cold and heat. Other–Occasional exposure to conflict; must be capable of working with physically challenged children and adults.

Selection Procedures

Applicants for part-time and temporary recruitments who meet the minimum qualifications are either referred to the hiring department for further selection or they may be required to take a written examination. If a written examination is given, the top candidates may be referred to the hiring department for further selection.

Physical Exam : Some classifications require physical examinations. Final appointment cannot be made until the eligible has passed the physical examination. The County pays for physical examinations administered in its medical facilities.

Pre-employment Drug Screening Exam : Some classifications require a new employee successfully pass a pre-employment drug screen as a condition of employment. Final appointment cannot be made until the eligible has passed the drug screen. The County pays for the initial drug screen.

Employment of Relatives: Applicants who are relatives of employees in a department within the 3rd degree of relationship, (parent, child, grandparent, grandchild or sibling) either by blood or marriage, may not be appointed, promoted, transferred into or within the department when:

• They are related to the Appointing Authority, or
• The employment would result in one of them supervising the work of the other

Department Heads may establish additional limitations on the hiring of relatives by departmental rule.
