Community Liaison - Public Safety (Non-Sworn)

Community Services Officer (CSO) Overview The CSO provides a visible, easily identifiable Department presence on Main Street and surrounding areas, acting as a liaison between sworn personnel, businesses, tourists, and the community. Training CPR/First Aid/AED/Narcan Sharps safety Mental Health First Aid Internal computer record‑keeping software Recognizing crimes/when to call for sworn officers Town Ordinances Community Policing Main Street familiarization (classroom and practical) Key Responsibilities Act as a liaison between sworn officers and local businesses, tourists, and residents. Provide direct, face‑to‑face contact with the Police Department, accessible 7 days a week. Serve as the Department’s “eyes and ears” on Main Street. Assist in deterring shoplifters and other petty crimes. Collaborate with the Community Impact Unit to address homeless‑related issues. Qualifications & Selection Criteria The selection process focuses on personality traits: mature, outgoing, patient, well‑spoken, and resilient to stressful situations. Candidates should understand the role’s position as a non‑sworn, unarmed affiliate of the Police Department and be familiar with the specific needs of the Main Street and Hyannis area. Internship Opportunities Accepted applicants may pursue the CSO Program as part of a college internship, provided they obtain approval from their degree program and notify the BPD CSO Supervisor.
