Special Education Teacher

Job Title: Special Education Teacher Wage/Hour Status: Exempt Reports to: Principal Dept./School: Eagle Lake Intermediate Primary Purpose: Provide special education students with learning activities and experiences designed to help them fulfill potential for intellectual, emotional, physical, and social growth. Develop or modify curricula and prepare lessons and instructional materials to suit student ability levels. Work in self‑contained, team, departmental, or itinerant settings as assigned. Qualifications: Education/Certification: Bachelor’s degree from an accredited university Valid Texas teaching certificate with required special education endorsements for assignments Special Knowledge/Skills: Knowledge of students’ special needs in assigned area Knowledge of Admission, Review, and Dismissal (ARD) Committee process and Individual Education Plan (IEP) goal setting and implementation General knowledge of curriculum and instruction Experience: At least one year of student‑teaching or approved internship Major Responsibilities and Duties: Instructional Strategies Collaborate with students, parents and staff to develop IEPs through the ARD Committee process for each assigned student. Implement instructional, therapeutic, or skill‑development programs and provide written evidence of preparation. Plan and use instructional and learning strategies, materials, and equipment that address students’ learning styles and needs. Cooperate with classroom teachers to adapt regular curricula and support special education students in regular classes. Participate in ARD Committee meetings regularly. Conduct assessment of student learning styles and use results to plan instructional activities. Present subject matter according to IEP guidelines. Employ varied instructional techniques and media to meet each student’s needs. Plan and supervise assignments for teacher aide(s) and volunteer(s). Use technology in teaching and learning processes. Student Growth and Development Conduct ongoing assessments of student achievement through formal and informal testing. Supervise personal, medical care, and feeding as outlined in IEP. Assume responsibility for extracurricular activities assigned; sponsor outside activities approved by campus principal. Be a positive role model for students and support the school district’s mission. Classroom Management and Organization Create a learning environment conducive to physical, social, and emotional development. Manage student behavior and discipline; intervene in crisis situations and restrain students physically as required by IEP. Consult with classroom teachers on behavior management per IEP. Consult district and outside resources on education, social, medical, and personal needs. Take necessary precautions to protect students, equipment, and facilities. Assist in selecting instructional materials. Communication Maintain open communication by conducting conferences with parents, students, principals, and teachers. Maintain professional relationships with colleagues and community members. Use effective communication skills to present information accurately and clearly. Other Participate in staff development activities to improve job‑related skills. Stay informed of federal, state, district, and school regulations and policies for special education teachers. Compile, maintain, and file all required physical and computerized reports, records, and documents. Attend faculty meetings and serve on staff committees as required. Supervisory Responsibilities Supervise assigned teacher aide(s). Working Conditions Mental, physical, and environmental demands: Maintain emotional control under stress. Frequently perform duties such as standing, stooping, bending, kneeling, pushing, pulling. Move small stacks of textbooks, media equipment, desks, and other instructional resources. Support students with physical disabilities; maintain behavioral control; assist non‑ambulatory students. Exposure to biological hazards.
