Academic Division Chief of Women’s and Children’s

HonorHealth and the Arizona State University John Shufeldt School of Medicine and Medical Engineering (Shufeldt School) are seeking a dynamic, values-driven executive to serve as the Inaugural Academic Division Chief of Women's and Children's. As a founding leader for the newly established medical school which provides dual degrees in medicine and medical engineering in 4 years, the individual in this role will lead, guide and advance the academic vision related to HonorHealth's Women's and Children's Academic Division through research, education and clinical excellence, all while embodying the two organization's shared mission to advance personalized patient care and improve the health and well-being of the communities they serve.

This opportunity offers a unique chance to build and integrate an innovative curriculum focused on clinical education, academic program development, research and discovery. The division leader will be responsible for integrating biomedical sciences, patient care fundamentals, and clinical disciplines into educational and research programs that provide students with hands on patient experiences, precision education tools, artificial intelligence applications, and advanced health technologies.

The Academic Division Chief of the Women's and Children's Division will provide strategic and academic leadership for the division while strengthening educational and research initiatives through close collaboration with the HonorHealth Women's and Children's Medical Group and Service Line. This engagement will include, but is not limited to, clinical education, academic program development, research, and innovation efforts. This leader will play a pivotal role in shaping a forward-looking vision for the division that advances excellence in patient care, education, and research with a focus on incorporating engineering and technology into health care while preparing future physician-engineers to serve the evolving health priorities of patients across the Greater Phoenix region.

The position reports to Anthony M. Avellino, MD, MBA , Chair of the Department of Clinical Sciences, Associate Dean for Clinical Faculty Affairs and Professor of Medicine at the Arizona State University John Shufeldt School of Medicine and Advanced Medical Engineering. Dr. Avellino is an accomplished academic physician leader whose career includes senior faculty and leadership appointments at leading academic medical centers, including the University of Washington, University of Illinois, Michigan State University, and the University of Arizona. His experience in academic medicine, faculty development, clinical operations, and physician leadership provides a strong foundation for advancing ASU's vision for an innovative and integrated medical school.

The Academic Division Chief for Women's and Children's will lead the vision and overall strategy for the academic components of the division, which will include but is not limited to clinical education, academic program development, research, and innovation efforts

Essential Duties:

• Provide visionary leadership for Women's and Children's medical group and service line academic programs.

• Foster a culture of research and scholarly activity, including externally supported grants, with a focus on health technologies, including devices, AI, and health system science.

• Contribute to the recruitment and development of talented faculty.

• Oversee academic departmental budget, resources, and facilities to support teaching and research activities.

• Oversee the Women's and Children's UME and GME programs.

• Engage in dialogue and maintain relationships with internal and external ASU John Shufeldt School of Medicine and Medical Engineering partners.

• Partner with HonorHealth and/or ASU Foundation of fundraising activities related to the ASU/HonorHealth Medicine goals and initiatives

• Working with HonorHealth and ASU John Shufeldt School of Medicine and Medical Engineering leadership, develop and implement academic strategy that align broader organizational goals.

Minimum Qualifications

• Medical degree (M.D. or D.O., or MD/PHD, DO/PHD) with appropriate current board certification.

• Substantial clinical and academic experience for over 7 years, with a strong peer-reviewed publication record.

• National reputation as a leading expert in the field.

• Strong research experience, including track-record of competitive funding.

• Leadership experience in an academic medical setting.

• Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.

• Strong focus on and commitment to inclusive excellence within an academic setting.

• Ability to appreciate the unique offerings of an interdisciplinary program and to tailor offerings based on an innovative mission.

• Familiarity in a medical school setting.
