Calibration Technician III
Bring your expertise. Keep building it. Help others grow.
National Calibration Inc. (NCI) is looking for experienced calibration professionals who take pride in solving difficult technical problems, producing exceptional work, and helping raise the capabilities of the team around them.
As a Calibration Technician III, you are a trusted technical resource. You have the experience to work independently, handle complex calibrations, troubleshoot unusual results, interpret technical requirements, and make sound decisions when the answer isn’t immediately obvious.
This role is ideal for an experienced technician who enjoys the technical side of calibration and wants to continue developing their expertise while helping newer technicians become stronger.
You don’t need to have seen every instrument or know every discipline. What matters is having strong fundamentals, sound technical judgment, a commitment to quality, and the ability to figure things out.
What You’ll Do
As a Calibration Technician III, you’ll perform advanced calibration work while serving as a technical resource within the laboratory.
You will:
- Independently perform complex calibrations within your qualified technical disciplines
- Set up, operate, and properly care for calibration standards and sophisticated test equipment
- Evaluate measurement results, tolerances, specifications, and technical requirements
- Identify out-of-tolerance conditions and investigate questionable or inconsistent results
- Troubleshoot difficult calibration problems using a logical, methodical approach
- Interpret manufacturer specifications, technical manuals, drawings, standards, and other technical documentation
- Review calibration procedures and contribute to the development, validation, and improvement of calibration methods
- Apply a strong working knowledge of measurement uncertainty, traceability, accuracy, tolerances, and measurement principles
- Consistently apply NCI’s Quality System and applicable ISO/IEC 17025 requirements
- Ensure calibration data, documentation, and technical records are complete, accurate, and defensible
- Communicate technical findings clearly and support the investigation and resolution of technical or quality issues
- Train and mentor Calibration Technician I and II team members and reinforce proper calibration practices
- Continue expanding qualifications into additional equipment types and technical disciplines
- Take ownership of assigned work from setup through final technical review
What We’re Looking For
We’re looking for an experienced technician who combines strong technical ability with sound judgment, professionalism, and a commitment to quality.
A successful Calibration Technician III will:
- Have significant calibration experience or equivalent experience in a precision technical field
- Demonstrate advanced mechanical, electrical, dimensional, or analytical aptitude
- Be highly proficient with precision measurement equipment within their qualified disciplines
- Understand calibration principles beyond simply following a procedure
- Have a strong working knowledge of tolerances, specifications, traceability, and measurement uncertainty
- Independently interpret technical documentation and determine appropriate calibration methods
- Recognize when measurement results don’t make sense and know how to investigate why
- Troubleshoot complex technical and measurement problems
- Consistently produce accurate, high-quality work
- Be comfortable making technical decisions within their area of expertise while knowing when additional review is appropriate
- Communicate technical information clearly and professionally
- Be capable of training and developing less-experienced technicians
- Take ownership and accountability for the quality of their work
- Continue learning as equipment, technology, and measurement requirements evolve
Experience in calibration, metrology, electronics, dimensional measurement, machining, manufacturing, quality, testing, engineering, or another precision technical environment may be relevant.
Technical capability matters more to us than having followed one specific career path.
What Makes Someone Successful at Level III?
A Level III technician doesn’t just know how to perform a calibration. They understand why the measurement is being made, what can influence the result, and how to determine whether that result can be trusted.
When something doesn’t look right, they investigate. When a procedure isn’t clear, they know how to find and interpret the technical information needed to move forward. And when a less-experienced technician needs help, they can explain not only what to do — but why.
Level III technicians are people others can rely on for technical knowledge, judgment, quality, and consistency.
This isn’t simply about years of experience. It’s about what you can do with that experience.
Technical Leadership Without Leaving the Bench
Not every great technician wants to become a manager — and they shouldn’t have to become one to continue advancing their career.
Calibration Technician III is an advanced technical role. You’ll have opportunities to mentor others, contribute to technical improvements, solve challenging problems, and strengthen the laboratory while continuing to do hands-on technical work.
For technicians interested in future leadership opportunities, this position also provides a strong foundation for advancement into Lead Technician or other senior roles.
Physical Requirements
This is an active, hands-on laboratory position. Team members should be able to:
- Work throughout the day at laboratory benches and equipment stations, including periods of standing, walking, reaching, and sitting
- Safely handle tools, instruments, calibration standards, and precision equipment
- Occasionally bend, kneel, or crouch as needed to handle equipment
- Safely lift and move equipment weighing up to 50 pounds for short distances, with assistance when appropriate

- Exposure to challenging and diverse precision equipment
- Opportunities to mentor and develop other technicians
