Data Center Infrastructure Engineer - Role Overview
A Data Center Infrastructure Engineer designs, deploys, and maintains the physical and logical systems that keep modern data centers running at peak performance. This includes servers, networking hardware, structured cabling, power distribution, and environmental controls. These engineers ensure high availability, rapid incident response, and efficient capacity planning while supporting cloud and enterprise workloads. Key Responsibilities 1. Hardware Deployment & Physical Infrastructure
A Data Center Infrastructure Engineer designs, deploys, and maintains the physical and logical systems that keep modern data centers running at peak performance. This includes servers, networking hardware, structured cabling, power distribution, and environmental controls. These engineers ensure high availability, rapid incident response, and efficient capacity planning while supporting cloud and enterprise workloads. Key Responsibilities 1. Hardware Deployment & Physical Infrastructure
- Rack, cable (copper and fiber), and configure servers, storage arrays, and network devices.
- Perform structured cabling following industry standards (TIA/EIA).
- Validate hardware functionality through diagnostics and burn-in testing.
- Monitor and maintain PDUs, UPS systems, CRAC/CRAH units, and other HVAC components.
- Track and optimize space, power, and cooling capacity using DCIM platforms.
- Coordinate with facilities teams on electrical, mechanical, and environmental systems.
- Serve as the first responder for hardware, network, and environmental alerts.
- Perform root-cause analysis and execute repairs or escalate to vendors as needed.
- Replace failed components (disks, DIMMs, PSUs, NICs, etc.) and validate recovery.
- Manage physical access controls, visitor procedures, and audit readiness.
- Ensure compliance with safety standards (ESD, hot/cold aisle containment, PPE).
- Maintain secure handling and destruction of sensitive hardware.
- Maintain accurate records of hardware inventory, cabling maps, and change logs.
- Use scripting or automation tools to streamline monitoring, provisioning, or reporting.
- Contribute to SOPs, MOPs, and EOPs for repeatable operational processes.
- Strong understanding of Linux/Windows administration fundamentals.
- Knowledge of networking protocols (TCP/IP, BGP, OSPF, VLANs).
- Experience with server hardware, RAID, BIOS/UEFI, and out-of-band management (iDRAC, iLO, IPMI).
- Familiarity with DCIM tools (e.g., Nlyte, Sunbird, Schneider EcoStruxure).
- Hands-on work in data center operations, hardware deployment, or infrastructure support.
- Experience with structured cabling, fiber optics, and cable management best practices.
- Bachelor's degree in IT, Computer Science, Engineering, or related field.
- Common certifications: CCNA , CCNP , CompTIA Server+ , Network+ , Data Center certifications (Cisco/Juniper) .
