OSP Construction Inspector

Location: Novi, Plymouth, & Livonia, MI areas (100% Field-Based)

Job Type: Full-Time / Contract

Pay Rate: $30.00 – $35.00/hour + $110/week Mileage

Industry: Telecommunications / Underground Infrastructure Deployment

The Mission: Ground-Up Horizontal Directional Drilling Operations

On behalf of our client, a rapidly expanding telecommunications infrastructure provider, we are seeking a highly autonomous OSP Construction Inspector to drive a critical fiber network build.

The successful candidate must be a self-motivated, vehicle-based operator capable of managing their daily schedule independently. Your primary directive is setting up, managing, and driving daily underground horizontal directional drilling operations while acting as the client's ultimate field advocate for safety, compliance, and quality.

Key Responsibilities

• Drill Operations & Staging: Take full ownership of directional drilling site preparation, setup, and execution. Coordinate site staging and resource positioning for drill rigs and support crews.
• Jurisdictional Liaison: Work directly with local municipalities and the Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) to ensure compliance with right-of-way, permitting, and traffic control guidelines.
• Subcontractor Oversight: Directly manage, audit, and oversee General Contractors, subcontractors, and directional drill crews to ensure project milestones are met safely and efficiently.
• Quality Assurance & Compliance: Inspect OSP construction sites to verify that all installations, materials, and depths conform to engineering layouts, design standards, and industry best practices.
• Safety Monitoring: Enforce strict job site safety protocols. Monitor active drill sites for proper use of PPE, safe heavy equipment operation, utility potholing verification, and trench/bore safety to mitigate field risks.
• Issue Resolution: Identify engineering deviations or field conflicts in real-time, working directly with drill crews to implement swift, cost-effective corrective actions.

Qualifications of a Strong Candidate

• Experience: 3+ years of experience in OSP construction inspection or field utility supervision, with a strong background in horizontal directional drilling (HDD) and telecommunications infrastructure.
• Technical Knowledge: Thorough understanding of OSP construction standards, underground utility placement, fiber optic infrastructure components, and testing procedures.
• Autonomy & Accountability: Proven ability to self-manage, prioritize workloads, and operate productively from a mobile vehicle-office environment without daily supervision.
• Regulatory Familiarity: Experience working with local municipal codes and DOT traffic/permitting requirements.
• Communication Skills: Excellent interpersonal and oral communication skills; ability to confidently deliver technical feedback and directives to subcontractors and stakeholders.
• Education & Certifications: High school diploma or equivalent required (technical or vocational training preferred). BICSI OSP Technician or equivalent certifications are highly desirable.
• Logistics: Must possess a valid driver’s license, a reliable vehicle suited for active construction terrain, and be able to pass a pre-employment background and motor vehicle record (MVR) check.
