The Fleet Mechanic performs skilled inspection, preventive maintenance, troubleshooting, and repair of City vehicles, trucks, heavy equipment, and other fleet assets. Duties include repairing engines, transmissions, electrical and hydraulic systems, brakes, steering, suspension, air conditioning, tires, and other components. The position also performs welding, fabrication, basic body repairs, diagnostic testing, road testing, and service calls; operates various shop equipment; maintains repair records; assists with obtaining parts and supplies; and performs other related duties as assigned. Specific Duties and Responsibilities Essential Functions: Inspect, diagnose, troubleshoot, maintain, and repair City vehicles, trucks, heavy equipment, and other fleet assets, including identifying mechanical, electrical, and hydraulic malfunctions. Perform major mechanical repairs, including engine rebuilding, transmission removal and replacement, rear-end repairs, clutch and brake replacement, and other major component repairs. Perform preventive maintenance, including tune-ups, oil and filter changes, fluid checks, lubrication, air conditioning service, and other scheduled maintenance. Diagnose and repair electrical, hydraulic, braking, steering, suspension, and other vehicle and equipment systems. Perform tire repairs and replacements, wheel balancing, wheel alignments, and suspension repairs. Perform welding, fabrication, and basic body repair, including straightening panels and applying body fillers, primers, and paint as needed. Perform repairs and maintenance on equipment such as mowers and other specialized fleet equipment, including sharpening blades. Use diagnostic equipment, service manuals, wiring diagrams, and other technical resources to identify and correct mechanical and electrical problems. Perform road tests following repairs to verify safe and proper operation; provide roadside assistance and service calls as needed. Operate and safely use shop equipment and tools, including lifts, jacks, forklifts, welders, torches, grinders, air tools, alignment equipment, diagnostic equipment, and other assigned equipment. Maintain daily work records, maintenance logs, repair documentation, and records of services performed. Identify needed parts and supplies and assist with locating, obtaining, and purchasing parts in accordance with City procedures. Inspect vehicles and equipment after repairs to ensure they are safe, reliable, and operational. Refuel vehicles and equipment and assist with checking vehicles and equipment in and out as required. Deliver fuel, vehicles, equipment, or other fleet-related items to City facilities or work locations as needed. Maintain a clean, organized, and safe garage and work area and follow all applicable safety procedures. Report unsafe conditions, equipment deficiencies, and major mechanical problems to the Fleet Services Director or appropriate supervisor. Coordinate with Fleet Services staff, vendors, repair facilities, and City departments as necessary to complete repairs and obtain parts or services. Assist with fleet inspections, maintenance programs, and other Fleet Services activities. Perform other related duties as assigned. Perform related duties as assigned. Valid Georgia driver's license. Knowledge of methods, tools, equipment, and procedures used in the inspection, preventive maintenance, troubleshooting, and repair of a variety of vehicles and heavy equipment. Knowledge of gasoline and diesel engines, hydraulic systems, electrical systems, braking systems, steering and suspension systems, and other vehicle and equipment components. Knowledge of preventive maintenance practices and the ability to identify potential mechanical problems and recommend necessary repairs. Knowledge of welding, fabrication, and basic vehicle body and paint repair techniques. Ability to troubleshoot, diagnose, repair, and maintain light-, medium-, and heavy-duty vehicles and equipment. Ability to use diagnostic and electronic testing equipment to identify mechanical, electrical, and computer-related problems. Ability to safely operate and properly maintain hand and power tools, forklifts, torches, welding equipment, wheel balancers, lifts, grinders, vehicles, jacks, air tools, alignment equipment, diagnostic tools, and other shop equipment. Ability to read and interpret service manuals, wiring diagrams, safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, procedure manuals, and other technical documents. Ability to perform repairs accurately and efficiently while following established safety procedures, manufacturer specifications, and departmental standards. Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions and work independently with limited supervision. Ability to communicate clearly and professionally with supervisors, coworkers, vendors, and other City employees regarding vehicle and equipment maintenance and repairs. Ability to maintain accurate basic maintenance and repair records and document work performed. Ability to identify parts, materials, and equipment needed to complete repairs. Ability to work safely around moving vehicles, heavy equipment, mechanical parts, chemicals, fuels, and other hazards associated with fleet maintenance. Ability to prioritize work, troubleshoot problems, and complete assignments in a timely manner. Ability to maintain professional working relationships and work effectively as part of a team. Working Conditions and Physical Abilities While performing the essential functions of this position, the employee is regularly required to stand, walk, sit, bend, kneel, climb on and off vehicles and equipment, reach, use hands and fingers, and work in confined or elevated areas. The employee must be able to push, pull, and lift up to 50 pounds frequently and up to 100 pounds occasionally. Work is primarily performed in a fleet maintenance garage and may involve exposure to noise, fumes, exhaust, dust, chemicals, oils, fuels, moving mechanical parts, electrical equipment, varying temperatures, and other hazards associated with vehicle and equipment repair. Appropriate safety procedures and protective equipment must be used. The work environment is typically loud and may require working outdoors or responding to roadside service calls as needed.
