Physician (Inpatient Psychiatry)

Summary The West Palm Beach VA Healthcare System's Mental Health Service is seeking an experienced and dynamic Psychiatrist. You must be an excellent communicator, a team player, and adaptable to the needs of a growing medical center. Qualifications To qualify for this position you must meet the basic requirements and any additional requirements listed in the job announcement. Applicants pending completion of training or license requirements may be referenced and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met. United States citizenship (non‑citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA policy). Doctor of Medicine or equivalent degree in allopathic or osteopathic medicine from a school approved by the Department of Veterans Affairs for the year of completion. Current full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in any U.S. state, territory, or the District of Columbia. Residency training approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs in an accredited core specialty training program leading to board certification. Alternate pathways include one year of post‑medical‑school training followed by two years of independent practice, or non‑U.S. residency training followed by a minimum of three years of verified independent practice. Exception: Residents currently enrolled in an ACGME/AOA accredited residency training program and who would otherwise meet the basic requirements are eligible to be appointed as Physician Resident Providers (PRPs) on an intermittent basis. Proficiency in spoken and written English. Reference: Physical requirements: must pass a pre‑employment physical examination as required by VA Handbook 5019; able to lift up to 44 lbs, carry up to 15 lbs, reach above shoulder, use fingers, hands, legs, cranes and motor vehicles, walk and stand up to 8 hours, bend and climb, and hear whisper. The incumbent must be physically, emotionally, and mentally stable to efficiently perform essential functions of this position without hazard to themselves or others. Responsibilities Diagnose, treat, and manage psychiatric disorders within a multidisciplinary team framework. Conduct inpatient psychiatric evaluations, consultations, and group therapy/treatment in an inpatient setting. Provide treatment across the full spectrum of DSM‑5 diagnoses. Utilize face‑to‑face interventions as well as telemental health (TMH). Provide cross‑coverage to other clinical sites within the West Palm Beach VA Health Care System via telemental health as needed. Identify Veterans’ mental and medical health needs and design diagnostic and therapeutic plans to meet those needs. Serve as the medical subject matter expert within the assigned team. Coordinate activities of other health service personnel, resolve problems affecting Veteran care, and provide appropriate education for the Veteran and/or family members regarding the Veteran’s care, condition, and management. Ensure care is provided in accordance with VA/DoD clinical practice guidelines and quality metrics measured by the Peer Review Program. Provide on‑call and on‑duty coverage during weekends, holidays, evenings, and nights. Work schedule: Monday–Friday 8:00 am–4:30 pm. Paid time off: 50–55 days of paid time off per year (26 days annual leave, 13 days sick leave, 11 paid federal holidays, and possible 5 days paid absence for CME).
