Summary
The Electrical Specialist is responsible for performing advanced electrical installation, maintenance, troubleshooting, testing, and repair activities in support of industrial construction, maintenance, turnaround, and capital projects. The position works on electrical distribution systems, motors, motor controls, transformers, switchgear, lighting systems, conduit and cable systems, and other electrical equipment within refinery, petrochemical, chemical, power generation, manufacturing, and other heavy industrial environments.
The Electrical Specialist serves as a skilled technical resource in the field and is expected to independently perform complex electrical assignments, interpret electrical drawings and specifications, identify and troubleshoot electrical issues, and support safe and efficient project execution. Work must be performed in accordance with applicable codes and standards, Company safety requirements, customer specifications, manufacturer requirements, and project quality standards.

Minimum Qualifications
- High school diploma or GED required; completion of an electrical apprenticeship, technical program, or equivalent electrical training preferred.
- Minimum five (5) years of progressively responsible industrial electrical construction, maintenance, or troubleshooting experience.
- Demonstrated experience working with industrial electrical distribution, power, motor control, and related electrical systems.
- Experience working in refinery, petrochemical, chemical, LNG, power generation, manufacturing, or other heavy industrial facilities preferred.
- Ability to read and interpret electrical drawings, one-line diagrams, schematics, wiring diagrams, cable schedules, equipment drawings, specifications, and construction documents.
- Demonstrated ability to troubleshoot electrical equipment and systems using appropriate test instruments and diagnostic methods.
- Working knowledge of applicable electrical codes, standards, and safe work practices.
- Ability to successfully complete required Company, customer, and site-specific safety training, orientations, and access requirements.
- Must possess and maintain any electrical license, registration, or certification required by the state or other applicable jurisdiction in which electrical work is performed, based on the duties and scope of work assigned.
- NCCER Electrical certification or other recognized electrical craft certification preferred.
- Valid Transportation Worker Identification Credential (TWIC) preferred or ability to obtain one when required by project or customer assignment.
- Valid driver's license and ability to meet Company driving requirements when driving on Company business is required .
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Advanced working knowledge of industrial electrical construction, installation, maintenance, and troubleshooting practices.
- Strong knowledge of electrical distribution systems, switchgear, transformers, panelboards, motor control centers (MCCs), motors, starters, variable frequency drives (VFDs), lighting systems, grounding systems, and associated electrical equipment.
- Working knowledge of conduit systems, cable tray, cable installation, terminations, grounding and bonding, and electrical equipment installation.
- Knowledge of applicable National Electrical Code (NEC), NFPA requirements, Company electrical safety practices, and other standards applicable to assigned work.
- Ability to interpret electrical one-lines, schematics, wiring diagrams, elementary diagrams, equipment drawings, specifications, and manufacturer documentation.
- Ability to troubleshoot electrical circuits and equipment using multimeters, insulation resistance testers, clamp meters, and other approved electrical test instruments for which the employee is trained and qualified.
- Ability to identify electrical hazards and apply appropriate electrical safe-work practices, including lockout/tagout and verification of an electrically safe work condition.
- Knowledge of electrical equipment installation requirements, clearances, grounding, conductor sizing, conduit installation, and termination practices.
- Ability to recognize defective, damaged, improperly installed, or nonconforming electrical equipment and workmanship.
- Ability to independently evaluate electrical problems, identify potential causes, and recommend appropriate corrective actions.
- Ability to accurately perform electrical measurements, calculations, and material take-offs applicable to assigned work.
- Ability to safely use electrical hand tools, power tools, testing equipment, and specialty tools for which the employee is trained and authorized.
- Strong attention to detail and commitment to quality workmanship.
- Effective verbal and written communication skills.
- Ability to clearly communicate technical information to supervision, craft personnel, operations personnel, customers, and other project stakeholders.
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively as part of a multi-craft construction or maintenance team.
- Ability to adapt to changing project priorities, emergency work requirements, and jobsite conditions.
Essential Functions
- Perform advanced electrical installation, maintenance, troubleshooting, testing, and repair activities on industrial electrical systems and equipment.
- Install, maintain, troubleshoot, and repair electrical distribution equipment, including switchgear, transformers, panelboards, motor control centers, disconnects, motors, starters, variable frequency drives, and related equipment within the employee's training and qualifications.
- Install and maintain conduit, cable tray, raceways, electrical supports, conductors, cables, grounding systems, and associated electrical components.
- Perform conductor and cable pulling, routing, identification, termination, splicing, and connection activities in accordance with drawings, specifications, and applicable requirements.
- Install and terminate electrical equipment, panels, motors, control devices, and other electrical components.
- Read and interpret one-line diagrams, schematics, wiring diagrams, cable schedules, equipment drawings, construction drawings, specifications, and work packages.
- Troubleshoot electrical circuits, controls, equipment, and power-distribution systems to identify faults, failures, or abnormal operating conditions.
- Perform electrical testing and diagnostic activities using approved test instruments and procedures within the employee's demonstrated training, qualification, and authorization.
- Verify installations for proper connections, polarity, grounding, labeling, torque, workmanship, and compliance with applicable drawings and specifications.
- Inspect electrical equipment, components, tools, and work areas and promptly report damaged, defective, unsafe, or nonconforming conditions.
- Assist with equipment energization, startup, commissioning, and functional verification activities when trained, qualified, authorized, and assigned.
- Perform preventive and corrective electrical maintenance activities in accordance with approved work procedures and manufacturer recommendations.
- Identify material, equipment, drawing, access, constructability, or technical issues that may affect execution and promptly communicate concerns to supervision.
- Provide technical guidance and field support to electrical craft personnel as requested without assuming formal supervisory responsibility.
- Coordinate assigned work with operations, instrumentation personnel, other crafts, equipment operators, project supervision, engineering, safety, and quality personnel.
- Verify work is performed in accordance with applicable electrical codes, project drawings, specifications, Company procedures, customer requirements, and quality standards.
- Follow established electrical safe-work practices, energy-isolation procedures, lockout/tagout requirements, and electrical hazard-control procedures.
- Verify the absence of voltage and establish electrically safe work conditions when trained, qualified, authorized, and required by assigned work.
- Perform energized electrical work only when specifically permitted by Company policy and applicable requirements and when appropriately trained, qualified, authorized, and provided the required controls and PPE.
- Participate in pre-task planning, JHAs/JSAs, toolbox talks, safety meetings, job walkdowns, and other required project activities.
- Exercise stop-work authority when unsafe conditions exist and immediately communicate safety concerns to supervision.
- Maintain tools, test equipment, materials, and work areas in a clean, organized, and safe condition.
- Complete required inspection forms, test records, equipment documentation, work packages, and other project documentation accurately and timely.
- Support project turnover, commissioning, punch-list completion, and closeout activities as required.
- Perform other duties as assigned consistent with the position's responsibilities, training, qualifications, and authorization
Physical Demands
- Ability to stand and walk for extended periods while performing electrical construction, maintenance, and troubleshooting activities.
- Ability to frequently bend, stoop, kneel, crouch, squat, reach, grasp, push, pull, and perform repetitive hand and arm movements.
- Ability to climb stairs and ladders and access scaffolds, elevated work platforms, equipment structures, and other industrial work areas.
- Ability to work on uneven, muddy, rocky, or otherwise variable walking and working surfaces.
- Ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds frequently and handle heavier materials or equipment using appropriate assistance or material-handling methods.
- Ability to perform work requiring manual dexterity and the use of hand tools, power tools, electrical testing instruments, and related equipment.
- Ability to maintain sufficient visual, auditory, and spatial awareness to safely perform electrical work and recognize surrounding hazards.
- Ability to work outdoors and in varying temperatures and weather conditions.
- Ability to wear required personal protective equipment (PPE) including but not limited to:
- Hard hat, life vests, ear protection, leather gloves, hard hat, slicker suit, acid suit, rubber gloves, full face breathing mask, wearing full safety harness, or wearing a face shield.
Work Environment
- Work is primarily performed at active refinery, petrochemical, chemical, LNG, power generation, manufacturing, construction, maintenance, and other heavy industrial facilities.
- Regular exposure to electrical equipment, energized systems, construction equipment, noise, vibration, dust, dirt, fumes, outdoor weather conditions, temperature extremes, and other conditions typical of industrial environments.
- Work may be performed around operating process units, electrical distribution equipment, rotating equipment, elevated work areas, underground and overhead utilities, and active construction or maintenance activities.
- Work may require access to restricted areas, elevated locations, electrical rooms, substations, motor control centers, and other industrial work locations.
- Work schedules may include overtime, weekends, holidays, extended shifts, night shifts, emergency callouts, and turnaround/outage schedules based on project and customer requirements.
- Travel or temporary assignment to different project or customer locations may be required based on business needs.
- Employees must comply with all Company and customer safety, environmental, security, training, qualification, and site-access requirements.
