Job Description Summary Registered Nurse I on the 9 East Unit reports to the Nurse Manager. Under general supervision, the RN I provides individualized, goal‑directed nursing care to patients and families using principles and practices of the nursing process at the beginner level. This role interacts with the interdisciplinary health‑care team to achieve desired outcomes. Entity Medical University Hospital Authority (MUHA) Employment Details Type: Employee – Regular Pay Grade: Health‑27 (Hourly) Schedule: 36 hours per week (3‑12 hour rotating shifts) Job Summary / Purpose 9 East is a 23‑bed Neuroscience step‑down unit caring for adult stroke, neurosurgery, and neurology patients. The unit provides continuous monitoring (arterial lines, CVP, ICP, SpO₂, EKG) and encounters diagnoses such as ischemic/hemorrhagic stroke, subdural hematoma, tumor resection, spinal/neurosurgery, neuro‑endovascular surgery, Parkinson’s, and epilepsy. Nursing staff are NIHSS, ACLS certified and encouraged to become Stroke Certified. Staffing ratios are 1:3 or 1:4 based on acuity. The unit emphasizes safe outcomes, teamwork, and professional growth opportunities. Responsibilities Under general supervision, an RN I (new graduate) assists at the advanced beginner level by providing individualized, goal‑directed nursing care to patients and families. The RN engages with the health‑care team to achieve desired outcomes and supports the unit’s quality and safety goals. Minimum Training and Education Bachelor of Nursing degree preferred. Existing MUSC employees with an associate or diploma in nursing must be enrolled in an accredited BSN program and obtain a BSN within four years of hiring or reclassification. Required Licensure, Certifications, and Registrations Registered nurse licensure by the South Carolina Board of Nursing or a compact state. Basic Life Support (BLS) certification (AHA BLS for Healthcare Providers or equivalent). Physical and Mental Requirements Ability to stand, sit, walk, and climb stairs continuously; lift and carry up to 50 lbs unassisted; perform hand and hand‑arm movements to maintain patient care; work in confined spaces and rotating shifts; work overtime as required; maintain good vision and hearing.
