Job Description Virginia Peninsula Community College is a two-year institution of higher education established as a part of a statewide system of community colleges. It primarily serves the residents of the cities of Hampton, Newport News, Poquoson, and Williamsburg, and the counties of James City and York. The Director of the Center for Teaching & Learning (CTL) provides strategic leadership to strengthen teaching excellence, inclusive pedagogy, and student learning across all instructional modalities (in-person, hybrid, online). The Director designs, facilitates, and evaluates comprehensive professional development for full-time and part-time teaching faculty, supports program- and course level assessment, advances teaching and learning through research-based and proven approaches, and coordinates instructional technology adoption and faculty onboarding. Reporting to the Associate Vice President for Academic Affairs, the Director manages CTL operations, staff, and budget; leads needs assessments; aligns CTL programming with institutional goals; and builds partnerships with departments, libraries, IT/eLearning, HR, and student success units. The Director also stewards quality frameworks (e.g., course design standards), coordinates new/adjunct faculty orientation, leads college-wide initiatives such as the Quality Enhancement Plan (QEP) and other VCCS Teaching and Learning initiatives, and oversees recognition programs for teaching excellence, ensuring evidence based, equity minded practices that improve student -person, hybrid, online). The Director designs, delivers, and evaluates comprehensive professional development-level assessment, advances the -based, equity-minded practices that improve student outcomes. This is a full-time, restricted grant-funded 12-month administrative position. Continuation of employment is based on funding availability. Evenings and weekend events may occasionally be required. This position is designated as Campus Security Authority (Clery Act) and Responsible Employee (Title IX) Duties and responsibilities Lead the Center for Teaching & Learning portfolio and strategy
• Set CTL vision and annual plan
• Align programming and annual plan with college strategic plan
• Manage operations and budget
• Convene and facilitate the teaching and learning advisory committee
• Coordinate with Academic Affairs, IT/eLearning, Library, HR, and Student Success divisions to develop and facilitate timely, current, and aligned professional development opportunities.
• Produce annual Impact Report (participation, outcomes, satisfaction, equity indicators) at the end of each academic year. Design and facilitate faculty professional development & orientations
• Conduct needs assessments
• Facilitate the delivery of workshops, institutes, learning community events, open office hours, and individual coaching/mentoring sessions.
• Plan and facilitate the New Faculty Academy in collaboration with Academic Deans
• Plan and facilitate Adjunct and Dual Enrollment Faculty Orientations in collaboration with Academic Deans
• Maintain yearly calendar of CTL events
• Maintain online faculty resource hub
• Promote inclusive/high-impact teaching practices
• Provide LMS training and support in collaboration with IT/eLearning
• Plan and assist faculty with the integration of accessible design (e.g. UDL) into their instruction
• Serve as part of the Faculty Award Committee to plan events and recognize teaching excellence Special Assignments
May be required to perform other duties as assigned. May be required to assist the agency or state government generally in the event of an emergency declaration by the Governor. KSA's/Required Qualifications
• Master's degree from a regionally accredited institution in education, instructional design/technology, curriculum and instruction, or any academic field of study.
• Demonstrated postsecondary teaching experience and record of effective pedagogy in multiple teaching modalities.
• Documented experience designing and facilitating faculty professional development.
• Familiarity with quality frameworks (e.g., course design standards, assessment rubrics) and accreditation-aligned practices.
• Demonstrated use of instructional design and educational technologies aligned with best teaching and learning practices in higher education Knowledge:
• Extensive knowledge of evidence-based pedagogy, inclusive and culturally responsive teaching, learning science, and the latest in teaching and learning scholarship.
• Extensive knowledge of curriculum and assessment practices (alignment of learning outcomes with instructional practices and classroom assessment techniques)
• Extensive knowledge of instructional design
• Knowledge of faculty development models, program evaluation, and institutional effectiveness as they relate to teaching and learning. Skills:
• Able to design professional development programs and facilitate professional development activities for a diverse faculty audience.
• Proficient in consultation and coaching of faculty and departments.
• Change management
