Position Overview
Responsible for patrolling assigned areas, responding to calls, providing assistance, serving warrants of arrest, completing reports, preparing court testimony and testifying as needed, transporting prisoners, maintaining positive relationship with citizens.
Qualifications Required
Must be minimum 21 years of age (Limited number of Cadet positions available for individuals ages 18-20); must possess valid driver's license and social security card; must successfully complete the in-house 12-week Recruit Training Program; must successfully complete the Alabama Police Academy within six months of employment; must pass required pre-employment testing; must not have any convictions of the following crimes: felony, DUI (within last 5 years), domestic violence or excessive traffic violations; must be able to work flexible hours; must be able to communicate and interact with individuals of various races, educational levels and social groups; must exercise courtesy, diplomacy and tact in performance of duties; must be able to remain calm in stressful situations. Tattoos are allowed (with the exception of hands, neck, and face).
Physical Qualifications Required
Must be able to distinguish colors; must meet physical requirements mandated by the APOSTC; must hear well enough to operate a two-way radio and communicate over telephone; must be agile enough to climb stairs, ladders, fences, etc., must be dexterous enough to use hands and fingers to write, grasp weapon(s), handcuffs, pull trigger, etc., must be strong enough to lift up to 165 pounds.
Qualifications Preferred
Applicant APOSTC (Alabama Peace Officers Standards and Training Commission) certified preferred.

Job Summary
Under the general supervision of the sergeant and lieutenant, the police officer is responsible for law enforcement, administrative, pro-active patrolling, traffic accident investigations and public relations tasks. The employee is responsible for protecting the public, attempting to prevent crimes from occurring, enforcing the laws, and maintaining public relations.
Duties & Responsibilities
A. Law Enforcement (35%) – Makes arrests from serving warrants. Issues citations and warnings, both verbal and written, for traffic violations. Observes, identifies and acts upon criminal activity and traffic violations. Responds to and offers assistance to other officers at alarms, business, residential, fire, domestic disturbances with and without weapons, etc. Responds to all major crimes in progress, burglaries, robberies, officers or motorists needing assistance. Works with victims of violent crimes, rape, robbery and assault. Makes arrests to prevent harm from/to others (public intoxication, DUI). Prepares for and attends city (municipal), district, circuit, appeals, juvenile and federal courts. Secures crime scene to make sure no evidence is tainted or leaves the crime scene. Directs traffic for public events. Executes arrest and search warrants. Responds to police calls for service.
B. Administrative (10%) – Collects information and makes written incident/offense reports, private property and state automobile accident reports. Completion of the officer's daily reports and other reports required by the department. Records intelligence information on criminal and suspicious activity. Serves subpoenas, misdemeanor and felony warrants.
C. Pro-Active Patrol (30%) – Responsible for deterring crime and criminal activity by being present in high crime areas; recognizes potential crimes and safety hazards. Talks with citizens to gather information as to criminals and their activities. Performs security checks to homes and businesses upon special request. Patrols areas known for narcotics sale/use and areas looking for wanted persons. Investigates suspicious persons and vehicles (residential and business districts).
D. Public Relations (5%) – Speaks with citizens as a professional, portraying a positive impression of the department. Teaches classes as assigned to groups or organizations. Gives directions to citizens. Maintains professional conduct and attitude on and off duty. Assists fire and EMS on rescue calls.
E. Traffic Accident Investigation (20%) – Investigates all traffic and industrial accidents occurring within Phenix City. Prepares all required reports concerning accidents.
Job Specifications

Writing skills to make reports, write citations, warnings, label evidence, job assignments and convey actual events that have been reported. Math skills to do I/O reports, formulas for accident information, assess stolen property, determine what degree of certain crimes, figure speeds and fill out mileage. Reading skills to read street signs, reports, papers, civil judgments, law books, comprehend laws, understand court rulings. Skills to operate a vehicle, radar and other specialized police equipment. Ability to use good judgment and common sense; ability to qualify with police issued firearms and apprehend resisting persons. Ability to control stress and react positively in stressful situations. Ability to make sound decisions, follow orders and interact positively with the public.

Other Characteristics – Must have a high school diploma or its equivalent. Possess and maintain a valid driver's license. Must be certified by or enrolled in an Alabama Minimum Standards Police Academy within six months of hiring. Willing to work nonstandard hours and overtime. Must be at least 21 years of age.
