Hours may vary depending on your preference and will be discussed at time of interview. Pay listed is for a full-time employee. Part-time salary will be based on hours worked.
About the Job – Your Role
As the primary care provider, you will develop and implement comprehensive patient treatment plans, manage infections, sprains, and uncomplicated fractures, suture wounds not involving major vessels, nerves, or tendons, and recommend appropriate food supplements, over-the-counter medications, and prescribe antibiotics and other authorized drugs. Cases beyond your diagnostic or therapeutic scope will be referred to physicians or healthcare specialists per established protocols, with direct consultation as needed for complex diagnosis and care management challenges.
A key aspect of your role involves collaborating actively within a network of medical professionals operating both inside the Department of Corrections and across community organizations. By maintaining open lines of communication, sharing critical patient information, and participating in interdisciplinary case discussions, you help ensure that care coordination remains consistent and of high quality throughout the entire continuum of services. This collaborative approach supports the seamless transition of patients between settings, promotes effective follow-up, and strengthens overall patient outcomes.
This position is represented by American Federation of State, County, and Municipal Employees (AFSCME). This position may be eligible for Police & Fire (P&F) benefits through Public Employees Retirement System (PERS), as defined by statute.
Minimum Qualifications
A current Nurse Practitioner’s license (APRN-NP) (FNP) and Registered Nurse license issued by the Oregon State Board of Nursing.
Knowledge of:
Advanced primary care principles, methods, and evidence‑based clinical guidelines.
Standards of professional nurse practitioner practice, including assessment, diagnosis, treatment planning, and clinical decision‑making.
Management of chronic and acute health conditions commonly encountered in correctional health (e.g., hypertension, diabetes, respiratory disease, infectious disease, substance use disorders, and behavioral health conditions).
Trauma‑informed care, patient confidentiality requirements, and ethical considerations specific to correctional health services.
Skill in:
Performing comprehensive physical assessments, ordering and interpreting diagnostic tests, and formulating differential diagnoses.
Delivering patient‑centered, trauma‑informed primary care within a secure and fast‑paced clinical environment.
Responding effectively to urgent and emergent medical situations, including coordination with custody staff and emergency medical services.
Exercising clinical judgment, prioritizing competing demands, and making appropriate referrals to specialty, mental health, or higher‑level care.
Documenting clinical encounters accurately and efficiently using an electronic health record system.
Working collaboratively within a multidisciplinary healthcare team to support continuity of care and population‑based health initiatives.

Working Conditions
This position is located inside a prison facility and works in close contact with adults in custody in the institution setting. The purpose of this job is primary care and medical management of the adults in custody, including examination, diagnosis, treatment, and performance of specialized procedures that are within scope of practice of the licensed nurse practitioner, with referral to a physician when determination is made that illness or treatment is beyond the scope of practice. Treatment is provided in a setting that ranges from ambulatory or clinic care to infirmary or the Specialist Management Unit.

About the Process – What to Expect

Interview will be held with a panel of stakeholders who have completed panel assessment training. Scores will be determined based on predetermined questions and scoring guides. Final candidates will have a background check, PREA check, and reference checks.

Requirements for Employment
The successful candidate for this position must pass a Criminal Justice Information Systems (CJIS) fingerprint-based background check and maintain CJIS eligibility.
