Senior AI/ML Engineer, Autonomy Build Platform

Location This role is categorized as hybrid. The successful candidate is expected to report to the office in Austin, Detroit, Warren, Milford, Mountain View or Sunnyvale a minimum of 3 days per week. This position can be considered Remote if the candidate is in the Seattle, Washington area. About Us The AI Cloud and Developer Infrastructure organization is responsible for delivering and maintaining the tools and services engineers at GM use every day to do their best work and drive our cars forward. Tools and services we work on enhance the entire development process of engineers at GM — how/where code is checked out, modified, compiled, tested, merged, and eventually deployed. Our goal is to ensure our AV engineers and others have world‑class tools and a seamless development experience so that they can focus on the problems that matter most in their domain. The Role We are looking for a Senior Engineer with extensive engineering background, experience using a variety of developer tools and technologies, and a passion for developer productivity. As a leader on this team, we seek someone who cares deeply about the technical development of other engineers and can effectively balance business, user, and talent needs. The Team Build Platform owns creating the build system and tooling that supports our AV and AI developers. We use Bazel in front of an in-house Remote Bazel Executor (RBE) and Content Addressable Storage (CAS) to provide a premier build experience at Cruise. Our team constantly seeks optimizations and new tooling that improves our product. GM AI developers are heavy users of Python and Docker. The speed at which they can iterate directly impacts the rate at which our AVs improve. The tooling and workflows that Build Platform provides are central to the productivity of our AI developers, and improvements in this space quickly lead to enormous impact for Cruise. Responsibilities Design and implement improvements to our Python development ecosystem and workflows, which have a measurable and direct impact on engineering productivity. Collaborate with engineers across the company to understand and support their development workflows. Own technical projects from start to finish and be responsible for major technical decisions and tradeoffs. Lead complex projects that span teams, with many partners and customers. Participate in planning, code reviews, and design discussions. Contribute impactful projects to the team’s roadmap. Thrive in a fast‑paced, collaborative work environment where impact is a result of your efforts and where your contribution is highly visible. Drive software engineering best practices both within our team and across engineering by creating tooling that encourages and supports these practices. Mentor and up‑level other engineers on the team. Conduct technical interviews with well‑calibrated standards and play a crucial role in recruiting activities. Be a positive contributor to our team culture. Minimum Qualifications (Must‑Have) 3+ years of experience leading and driving large‑scale, cross‑team initiatives. Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science or related field or equivalent work experience. Experience working on developer tooling, Python, Docker, etc. Experience leading projects across multiple teams. Attention to detail and a desire to improve processes & systems around you. Deep understanding of operational impact for different technology tradeoffs. Passionate about self‑driving technology and its potential impact on the world. Preferred Qualifications (Nice‑to‑Have) 5+ years experience designing, building, and operating production systems at scale in the cloud. Experience programming with C++ or Go. Experience with compilers (clang, gcc, nvcc, etc). Experience with build systems such as Bazel or Buck. Experience with cloud infrastructure. Compensation The compensation information is a good faith estimate only. It is based on what a successful applicant might be paid in accordance with applicable state laws. The compensation may not be representative for positions located outside of New York, Colorado, California, or Washington. The salary range for this role: $170,000 to $240,000. The actual base salary a successful candidate will be offered within this range will vary based on factors relevant to the position.
