Position Summary:

The primary purpose of your job position is perform the day-to-day activities of the Dietary Department in accordance with current federal, state, and local standards, guidelines, and regulations governing our facility, and as may be directed by the Administrator, and/or the Director of Dietary Dept, to assure that quality nutritional services are provided on a daily basis and that the dietary dept is maintained in a clean, safe and sanitary manner.

Education

Cook, AM Tray Aides must possess, as a minimum an eighth grade education, would prefer a high school diploma or equivalent with additional education. Evening positions maybe age 14 or older. Some experience with food operations beneficial in regards to proper food preparations and techniques, safe operating procedures, etc.

Experience

Must have the ability to read, write, speak and understand the English language.

On-the-job training provided as needed.

Delegation of Authority

As a Dietary Aide, you are delegated by the Dietary Manager the responsibility, and accountability necessary for carrying out your assigned duties.

Performance Standards

1. Performs specific tasks in accordance with daily work assignments.
2. Perform day-to-day food service functions per standard of care.
3. Day-to-day food service functions may include but are not limited to: preparing foods, serving foods, putting away foods, dishwashing, cleaning, sanitizing, sweeping, and mopping of kitchen floors, emptying garbage, cleaning walls, fans, carts, and cupboards, racks.
4. Assist to maintain cleanliness/appearance of Dietary Department inside and out.
5. Be able to lift at least 50lbs and stand for long periods of time.
6. Ensure that established handwashing procedures are followed.
7. Ensure that supplies, equipment, etc., are maintained to provide a safe environment.
8. Ensure that containers of hazardous chemicals in the department are properly labeled & stored.
9. Ensure the use of safety equipment and supplies when lifting or moving heavy objects.
10. Follow established safety policies and procedures.
11. Maintain a productive working relationship with other departments.
12. Assume the responsibility for maintaining your professional competence through participation in programs of continuing education (i.e., departmental meeting, inservices, seminars, training programs, etc.)
13. Promptly report equipment or facility damage to your supervisor.
14. Submit accident/incident reports to the Safety Director within twenty-four hour (24) hours after their occurrence.
15. Attends departmental and all staff meetings and educational sessions as part of job function.
16. Maintain confidentiality of all resident information.
17. Knock before entering a resident’ room.
18. Ensure that the residents’ personal and property rights are followed at all times.
19. Create and maintain an atmosphere of warmth, personal interest, and positive emphasis as well as a calm environment throughout the facility.
20. May be required to take PFA training and assist residents at meals.
21. Is responsible for any and all duties as assigned by the dietary manager.

Working Conditions

• Works in the dietary department, and dining rooms in the facility.
• Moves frequently during working hours.
• Is subject to frequent interruptions.
• Is involved with residents, personnel, visitors, government agencies/personnel, etc., all under conditions and circumstances.
• Is subject to hostile and emotionally upset residents, family members, personnel, and visitors at times.
• Communicates effectively with dietary personnel and other department personnel.
• Works beyond normal working hours and on weekends and holidays when necessary, as well as in other positions as needed.
• Is subject to call-back during emergency conditions (e.g., severe weather, evacuation, post-disaster, etc.).
• Attends and participates in continuing educational programs.
• Is subject to injury from falls, burns from equipment, odors, etc., throughout the work day, as well as reactions from dust, disinfectants, and other air contaminants.
• May be required to work in adverse weather conditions.

Specific Requirements

• Must be licensed in accordance with current applicable standards, codes, labor laws, etc.
• Must be able to read, write, speak, and understand the English language.
• Must possess the ability to make independent decisions, to follow instructions, and to accept constructive criticism.
• Must possess the ability to deal tactfully with personnel, resident, family members, visitors, government personnel and others as well as work harmoniously with other members of the St. Gerard’s team.
• Must maintain the care and use of supplies, equipment, etc., and maintain the appearance of the dietary department and main dining room.
• Must have patience, tact, a cheerful disposition, and enthusiasm, as well as be willing to handle residents based on whatever maturity level they are currently functioning.
• Must possess the ability to seek out new methods and principles and be willing to incorporate them into existing food service practices.
• Must be able to relate information concerning a resident’s condition.
• Must not pose a direct threat to the health or safety of other individuals in the workplace.

Physical and Sensory Requirements (With or Without the Aid of Mechanical Devices)

• Must be able to stand in stationary position throughout the work day.
• Must be able to lift heavy loads, like filled dishracks, cases of food or drink, and large amounts of prepared food in containers, roasters, and etc.
• Must be able to speak and write the English language in an understandable manner.
• Must be able to cope with the mental and emotional stress of the position.
• Must possess sight/hearing senses or use prosthetics that will enable these senses to function adequately so that the requirements of this position can be fully met.
• Must function independently and have flexibility, personal integrity, and the ability to work effectively with the residents, personnel, and support agencies.
• Must meet the general health requirements set forth by the policies of this facility.
• Must be able to relate and work with ill, disables, elderly, emotionally upset, and, at times, hostile people within the facility.
• May be necessary to assist in the evacuation of residents during emergency situations.
