Industrial Automation and PLC Controls Technician

A day in the life

You start your shift by reviewing overnight maintenance logs. A line shows intermittent faults—time to investigate. With your laptop connected to the PLC, you trace ladder logic, pinpoint an input anomaly, and correct it. You verify electrical loads, confirm proper breaker and transformer sizing, and restore the machinery to full operation. Later, you rewire a new station on a conveyor, update PLC programs, and document everything in accordance with SOPs and all applicable state, local, and National Electrical Codes. Before the day ends, you order the parts needed for upcoming preventive work and double-check electrical schematics for an upcoming changeover.

General scope of the role

Perform electrical functions on facility, production, and manufacturing equipment and machinery, completing all work in accordance with SOPs and all state, local and National Electrical Codes.

What you’ll do

• Analyze equipment and machinery malfunctions and initiate corrective actions to restore proper operation.
• Diagnose and resolve complex electrical issues using electronic test devices and related equipment.
• Troubleshoot and repair PLC applications and edit programs pertaining to PLCs .
• Perform electrical wiring for industrial equipment and machinery.
• Calculate appropriate sizing for wiring, breakers, and transformers for facility equipment and machinery.
• Order parts required to complete tasks efficiently.
• Read and interpret electrical blueprints, ladder logic, and technical manuals.
• Perform additional duties as assigned.

What you bring

• High school diploma/GED.
• Four (4) years of experience in a production environment (preferably FDA regulated) with PLC systems, conveyor systems, and electrical control systems.
• Formal electrical training through a trade school, military program, or apprenticeship; or a minimum of six (6) years of experience in a manufacturing environment (required).
• Solid understanding of PLC operation and the ability to troubleshoot using a laptop (required).
